The Rega Planar 8 is a high-end manual belt-drive turntable with a skeletal Tancast-8 plinth, the precise RB880 tonearm and an external Neo MK2 power supply.

It brings the DNA of Rega's reference turntable, the Naiad, into an attainable league: radically light, uncompromisingly rigid, built for sound rather than the spec sheet. Here in matte black.

Why the Planar 8?

With the Planar 8, Rega has stripped away everything that doesn't contribute to the sound. What remains is the "stressed beam" – the load-bearing spine between the tonearm base and main bearing – stiffened with a double phenolic-resin brace. The skeletal plinth made from a Tancast-8 foam core and HPL is 30% lighter than the old RP8, yet stiffer. Add to that the three-layer "Super-Flywheel" glass platter, two EBLT belts, and the hand-matched 24V motor on the Neo MK2 power supply.

What you'll hear

Silence between the notes. The Planar 8 lowers the noise floor so far that fine dynamics, space and tone colour seem to emerge out of nowhere. Timing and drive are unmistakably Rega, but with more resolution, more calm, and a soundstage that layers noticeably deeper than the Planar 6. This is high-end that doesn't show off – it just plays.

Who is the Planar 8 for? (and who it isn't – straight talk)

For anyone serious about vinyl who wants a turntable that moves closer to the reference without costing a fortune. The RB880 is built for moving-coil cartridges – Rega recommends the Ania or Apheta. Straight talk: the Planar 8 comes without a cartridge and without a phono stage, and its MC focus means you'll also need an MC-capable phono stage. If you want a plug-and-play complete package, you're better served a class down – if you want the maximum, this is exactly right.

Our verdict

The Planar 8 is the point where Rega's lightweight philosophy really takes flight: a turntable that makes many considerably more expensive designs look outdated. Once you've heard what the skeletal plinth brings in terms of calm, you won't want to go back. You rarely need more turntable than this – and if you do, it's called the Planar 10.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Rega Planar 8 come with a cartridge?

No, the Planar 8 is supplied without a cartridge. Rega has tuned it for moving-coil cartridges – Ania or Apheta are recommended. On request, we'll fit and align your chosen system fully ready to play.

Which phono preamp do I need?

One that matches your cartridge – with the recommended MC cartridges, that means an MC-capable phono stage such as the Rega Aria or Fono MC. The Planar 8 has no built-in phono stage. We'll tell you what fits your system.

How does the Planar 8 differ from the Planar 6?

The Planar 8 is consistent lightweight engineering: a skeletal plinth, a three-layer glass platter, the finer RB880 and two drive belts. The result is an even calmer background, more resolution and a deeper soundstage. A clear step towards the reference.

Why doesn't the Planar 8 have an outer frame any more?

Because mass that doesn't contribute to the sound has to go. The old RP8's outer frame is gone, and the removable one-piece cover saves further weight. What remains is the load-bearing, stiffened spine – exactly where rigidity counts.

Why buy the Rega Planar 8 at HD Zürisee?

Because a turntable in this class only plays as well as it's set up. We advise you on the right MC cartridge and phono stage, fit and align precisely, and match everything to your amplifier and room – personally in Wädenswil, with our own technician.
