The Rega Planar 1 Plus is a manual belt-drive turntable that comes fully ready to play right out of the factory – with a hand-built RB110 tonearm, a pre-fitted Rega Carbon cartridge and, the real highlight, a built-in MM phono stage. That means: you can connect it directly to any line or aux input – to active speakers, to a soundbar, to an amplifier without a phono input. Unbox, connect, drop the needle.

Why the Planar 1 Plus?

It takes everything that makes the Planar 1 so popular – the hand-built RB110 tonearm with play-free precision bearings, the 23 mm phenolic platter, the quiet 24-volt motor, all set at the factory – and builds the phono stage right into the housing. A switch lets you toggle between phono and line. That saves you an extra device and the cable clutter behind it, while keeping the option to run a higher-quality external phono stage later.

What you'll hear

The typical Rega drive: timing, momentum and sheer enjoyment. Bass is dry and on point, vocals stand tangibly in the room, and the built-in phono stage works cleanly and with low noise. You won't hear "the compromise of an all-in-one solution" – you'll hear an honest, lively turntable that just gets going. Honestly: there's barely an easier way into serious vinyl listening.

Who is the Planar 1 Plus for? (and who it isn't – straight talk)

Ideal for anyone whose amplifier or active speakers have no phono input – or who simply doesn't want an extra device. Straight talk: if you already own a good amplifier with a phono stage, with the Plus you're paying for something you already have – then take the regular Planar 1 and put the difference toward a better cartridge. If you expect full automation or Bluetooth, this isn't the right choice either.

Our verdict

The Planar 1 Plus is the simplest route to genuine vinyl sound when there's no phono input waiting at the other end. Ready to play, honestly matched, with a clean phono stage on board – and the warm walnut look makes a real visual statement too. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, the turntable we recommend when the system has "only" a free line input.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the Planar 1 and the Planar 1 Plus?

The only difference is the built-in MM phono stage. The Planar 1 Plus connects directly to a line or aux input, while the regular Planar 1 needs a phono input on the amplifier or an external phono stage. Tonearm, cartridge and turntable are identical on both.

Does the Planar 1 Plus work with active speakers or a soundbar?

Yes, that's exactly what it's designed for. The integrated phono stage outputs a line-level signal that you can feed directly into active speakers, soundbars or any line input – a separate phono preamp isn't needed.

Can I turn off the built-in phono stage?

Yes. A switch toggles between phono and line. That lets you use a higher-quality external phono stage later without replacing the turntable – just set it to phono and equalize externally.

Does the Planar 1 Plus come with a cartridge?

Yes. The Rega Carbon (MM) is fitted and set at the factory. Tracking force and anti-skate are aligned – set up, connect, play.

Goes well with

Thanks to the built-in phono stage, all you need are the right speakers or a suitable integrated amplifier – and, once your ears grow more demanding, a better cartridge later on. Tell us what you already have, and we'll fill in the rest.
