Ortofon 2MR mono MM Cartridge for Rega

The Ortofon 2MR mono is a moving magnet cartridge with a genuine mono generator, whose housing is built for the three-point mounting of Rega tonearms. It brings the mono tracking of the 2M mono into the narrow, lightweight 6-gram body made specifically for Rega.

A mono groove carries information only horizontally. The 2MR mono is wired exactly for that and blanks out the vertical movement, which in mono only carries noise. Technically yes, sensibly no – you'll hear both channels summed, with no spatial image. The 2MR mono only shows its strength on genuine mono pressings. For a mixed collection, a second stereo cartridge from the 2MR range is often worthwhile; we'll tell you which combination makes sense on your Rega.

Do I really need a separate mono cartridge alongside my stereo one?

For a larger mono collection, it's clearly worthwhile: the quieter background and stable centre image are an audible gain over a stereo cartridge on a mono groove.
