The Ortofon 2M Black is an MM cartridge with a nude Shibata stylus – the flagship of the 2M series, competing in a price range where Moving Coil cartridges usually start. That's exactly its appeal: it draws a resolution and dynamics out of the groove that you wouldn't credit a moving-magnet cartridge with at first glance – while staying as uncomplicated as a good MM should be.

Why the 2M Black?

Most MM cartridges play it safe, clean and correct. The 2M Black plays with attitude. The nude Shibata stylus tracks the groove more finely than the elliptical diamonds of its cheaper 2M siblings, and the silver-plated OFC winding delivers that mix of calm and drive reminiscent of Ortofon's legendary SPU classics. In practice that means: voices gain body, cymbals have air, and the bass drives instead of merely hinting at itself.

What you hear

A big, gripping way of playing. The 2M Black turns a good turntable into a mature analogue setup – provided the tonearm and phono stage keep up. Treble and fine detail come through cleanly, without ever turning shrill; in the midrange, the music sits right in the middle of the room. Anyone upgrading from a 2M Red or Blue hears the difference in the gut first, not on the spec sheet.

Who is the 2M Black for – and who isn't it for?

Ideal for anyone with a good to very good turntable and a light to medium-mass tonearm who wants to get the maximum out of the MM world without switching to the MC camp with a step-up transformer and specialist phono stage. Bottom line: Bolt the 2M Black onto a wobbly entry-level tonearm and you throw away its potential – that's like fitting winter tyres on a go-kart. And if you already run a high-quality MC system with matching electronics, you don't need it.

Our verdict

The 2M Black is the MM cartridge every other one has to measure up to. It sounds bigger, bolder and more mature than its price suggests – and for many, it simply makes switching to Moving Coil unnecessary. It's no surprise that Stereophile lists it as a Recommended Component and that The Absolute Sound gave it an Editors' Choice Award in 2024. Honestly: if your turntable is up to it, there's little that makes more sense in this class.

Frequently asked questions

Which phono input does the Ortofon 2M Black need?

The 2M Black needs a phono MM input (Moving Magnet) with 47 kOhm load resistance. Practically every phono preamp has one on board, as do many integrated amps with a built-in phono stage – a separate MC input or step-up transformer isn't necessary. That's one reason the 2M Black is so popular: a lot of sound, little extra effort.

Is the 2M Black better than a Moving Coil cartridge?

Not universally better, but the smarter choice for many. The 2M Black resolves so finely and plays so dynamically that it often makes the extra effort of an MC system – step-up transformer or MC phono stage, more gain – unnecessary. A first-rate Moving Coil with matching electronics can do more, but costs noticeably more money and care.

Why buy the Ortofon 2M Black at HD Zürisee?

Because a cartridge only sounds as good as its setup and the system around it. We'll set up your 2M Black properly – overhang, azimuth, tracking force – and tell you honestly whether it suits your tonearm and phono stage, or whether another cartridge makes more sense. HD Zürisee in Wädenswil is an authorised Ortofon dealer; if you have questions about matching it, call us or send us a message.
