Focal Aria EVO X N°1 Bookshelf Speaker, Gloss Black (Pair)

The Focal Aria EVO X N°1 is a compact 2-way bass-reflex bookshelf speaker from Focal's French Aria EVO X series. Supplied as a pair.

Its 16.5 cm Flax woofer – a sandwich of French flax between two fibreglass skins – and the inverted TAM tweeter in aluminium/magnesium deliver a natural, unobtrusive sound in a cabinet that fits on a shelf or a stand.

Why the Focal Aria EVO X N°1?

Because it packs Focal's core technologies into a compact format. The Flax cone combines lightness and rigidity for an open, neutral midrange. The TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) surround stabilises the cone at higher levels and keeps the midrange clean. The non-parallel cabinet suppresses standing waves inside. And then there's the leather-look front — technology you can also see.

Who's the Aria EVO X N°1 for — and who isn't it for?

Straight talk: ideal for small to medium rooms, an office, or as a high-quality second system. The lower cutoff frequency is 47 Hz (-6 dB) — decent for its size, but real deep bass only comes from a subwoofer or a larger Aria. And crammed onto a bookshelf, you give up soundstage: on the matching stand (Focal S900, 60.3 cm) it plays noticeably more freely.

Does the N°1 need a powerful amplifier?

At 89.5 dB sensitivity it's undemanding, but it likes quality. Around 50 watts per channel from a clean amplifier already lets the Flax cone breathe properly; it can handle up to 120 W.

Frequently asked questions

Do I absolutely need the Focal stands?

Not strictly, but acoustically it's clearly recommended. The S900 stands bring the tweeter to ear height and route the cable inside — a noticeable improvement in soundstage and looks over a bookshelf.

How close to the wall can the N°1 go?

A bit of distance helps, since the bass-reflex port is working. A few centimetres of air behind it keep the bass clean; too close to the wall and it thickens up.
