The Epos ES-14N is a 2-way bookshelf speaker that brings the British monitor legend ES-14 back to life as a complete new design by Karl-Heinz Fink.

In satin black, the ES-14N holds back visually – until it starts playing. A 178 mm polypropylene woofer and a 28 mm aluminium-ceramic composite dome sit in a heavily damped sandwich enclosure. The result is an open, honest sound that shows recordings as they are. Supplied as a pair.

Why the ES-14N?

Because this isn't a retro rehash but a ground-up new design. The enclosure walls work as a damped layered structure with bracing and absorb vibration before it colours the sound. The tweeter runs without ferrofluid, and Karl-Heinz Fink deliberately built in a small dip around 2 to 3 kHz so real music never bites. A lot of engineering, packaged very discreetly.

What you hear

A vivid soundstage with clearly defined imaging, fast bass with substance, and voices with body. The rear-firing reflex port is tuned to 38 Hz – astonishingly deep for an enclosure this size. The ES-14N sounds mature and big, provided it's positioned correctly.

Who is the ES-14N suited for?

Straight talk: for anyone who wants honesty over flattery and can give it room. The rear port needs 40 to 50 cm of wall clearance, a stable stand is mandatory, not an accessory. If you want to squeeze it onto a shelf against a wall, or want mediocre recordings glossed over, this isn't for you – the ES-14N reveals everything without mercy. For good recordings and rooms from around 15 to 20 m², there's little more honest in this class.

Our verdict

The ES-14N belongs to that rare breed of speaker that, positioned correctly, acoustically disappears from the room. The trade press agrees: Hi-Fi News awarded it "Outstanding Product" in issue 7/2023. Which amplifier and which stand height get the best out of it for you, we'll clarify by phone or WhatsApp – HD Zürisee in Wädenswil will happily set the pair up properly at your home on request.

Frequently asked questions

Does the ES-14N absolutely need stands?

Acoustically, yes. Height and coupling are part of the tuning; the soundstage only locks in on a stable stand at ear height. Epos recommends a stand height of 515 millimetres. A shelf or a wobbly sideboard costs you precision, bass definition and spaciousness. You hear that immediately.

How much wall clearance does the ES-14N need?

Around 40 to 50 centimetres to the rear. The bass-reflex port sits on the back and is tuned to 38 Hz; too close to the wall and the bass thickens up while the soundstage closes in. With a bit of air behind it, it plays clean, dry and controlled.

Is the ES-14N suitable for bi-wiring?

No, bi-wiring isn't provided for. The back carries a single-wiring terminal for 4 mm banana plugs, made in Germany, deliberately kept low-mass. So you need exactly one speaker cable per side – jumpers, double cables or bi-amping are out. That saves money better spent on one good single cable.

Why buy the Epos ES-14N at HD Zürisee?

Because a monitor of this class lives on advice, not on the box it comes in. We work out room, positioning, stand height and amplifier with you before you order – and once the speakers arrive, our own technician sets them up properly at your home. Asking costs nothing: phone, email or WhatsApp.

Goes well with

A powerful integrated amplifier gives the ES-14N the control it deserves. Add a pair of stable speaker stands, a decent speaker cable per side – and as a source that matches this honest character, a turntable.
