The Epos ES-28N is a 3-way floorstanding speaker with a floor-firing port that scales Karl-Heinz Fink's ES series up to full size.

Two 18 cm woofers, a dedicated 13 cm midrange driver and the 28 mm ceramic-aluminium dome share the work between them — a genuine three-way concept rather than an inflated two-way. Delivered in pairs, here in satin black.

Why the Epos ES-28N?

Because every frequency band gets its own driver. That takes the load off the midrange, sharpens the sense of space and keeps the bass clean. The crossover points sit at 330 and 2,700 Hz — exactly where voices pass through undisturbed. The cabinet is a damped sandwich construction with a 50 mm, two-layer front baffle. Midrange and tweeter each sit in their own chamber, and the bass reflex port fires downward.

What you hear

A large, free-standing soundstage, controlled bass depth and a midrange that gives voices body and calm. Honestly: the ES-28N doesn't flatter anything. A mediocre recording sounds mediocre here — but a good one sounds better than you'd have credited it with.

Who is the Epos ES-28N for — and who is it not for?

Straight talk: the ES-28N wants room. From around 25 square metres, it really breathes; below that, the bass depth dominates, and you're paying for cone area the room takes right back from you. In a 15-square-metre room, you're better and more honestly served by the ES-14N or ES-7N. It also needs an amplifier with reserves: 86 dB sensitivity and an impedance minimum under 4 ohms are not a job for the smallest integrated amp on the shelf.

More depth than the ES-14N, the same honesty. The trade press agrees: "Incorruptibly neutral, yet always reproducing with flesh and blood, here we have a speaker that has been through every audiophile trial by water and still remains uncomplicated."
