The Grado Prestige SR225x is an open-back on-ear headphone with a 44mm X driver, and the first model in the series to feature the larger F-cushions and tightly matched driver pairs.

This is where the Prestige x series makes its biggest leap – not on the spec sheet, but on the soundstage.

Why the SR225x?

Two things change compared with the SR125x: Grado matches the drivers to within 0.05 dB instead of 0.1 dB, and the F-cushions move the diaphragm further from the ear. One sharpens the midrange imaging, the other opens up the space. Add to that the 8-conductor super-annealed copper cable and a frequency response reaching up to 22 kHz.

What you hear

Noticeably more air around the instruments than with the S-cushion models, plus a treble that extends rather than pushes. Vocals sit cleanly in the centre, cymbals decay finely. Anyone who knows the smaller Grados will hear the difference within the first ten seconds.

Who is the SR225x for?

For anyone who likes the Grado sound but wants more space than the flat cushions allow – jazz, classical, well-recorded rock. Straight talk: the F-cushions sit on the ear, not around it. If you have sensitive ears, it's worth knowing beforehand. And it isolates nothing anyway.

What do the F-cushions offer over the S-cushions?

Distance. The F-cushions hold the driver further from the ear, which makes the SR225x sound more open, more spacious and less direct than the SR60x, SR80x and SR125x with their flat S-cushions. The core character stays the same, but the soundstage grows noticeably – the most audible difference within the series.

What does the 0.05 dB channel matching mean?

Grado measures every driver and only pairs those that deviate by no more than 0.05 dB from each other – half the tolerance of the SR60x through SR125x. In practice that means a more stable centre image and more precise localisation. The same figure applies to the SR325x.

Is a headphone amplifier worth it for the SR225x?

Recommended, not required. At 38 Ω and 98 dB at 1 mW, it plays happily from a laptop too. But because it delivers noticeably more resolution than the smaller models, it's also the first to show what a clean headphone output adds in terms of calm and control.
