Dynavox Record Cleaning Fluid (200 ml)

The Dynavox record cleaning fluid is a wet-cleaning set consisting of 200 ml of spray liquid and a microfibre cloth that dissolves dirt and grease film out of the groove.

Two to three sprays per side, wipe along with the cloth in the direction of the groove, let it dry briefly – that's the whole ritual. The cloth ships tucked into the cap, so you don't have to go hunting for it in the drawer where the spare batteries also live.

Why wet cleaning?

Because brushes reach their limits. You can lift loose dust off dry, but fingerprint grease, smoke film and decades of grime cling to the groove – a brush at best just pushes that around. The fluid dissolves this film, the cloth picks it up. Afterwards it audibly crackles less, and the stylus runs in a groove instead of a layer of debris.

What you get

A 200 ml spray bottle with an isopropanol-based cleaning solution and a microfibre cloth measuring 230 × 150 mm. That's enough for many records – unless you spray as generously as some people apply deodorant.

Who is the cleaning fluid suited for?

For anyone buying used records or reviving an inherited collection. Honestly: chemistry dissolves dirt, but it doesn't grow vinyl back – deep scratches stay scratches. Also important: the solution contains alcohol and is easily flammable, and it doesn't belong on shellac records or on paper labels. If you only ever play your own well-kept records, a dry brush will usually get you further.

How much fluid do I need per record side?

Two to three sprays per side are enough. The record should look moist and glossy, not swimming. Then wipe along with the microfibre cloth in the direction of the groove, i.e. in a circle rather than across, and let the record dry briefly before it goes back into the inner sleeve.

Can the fluid touch the label?

Better not. The paper soaks it up, warps and can bleach out. Hold the spray head flat against the groove surface and immediately wipe off any drops that reach the label anyway. If you clean a lot of used records, cover the label with a label-protector disc.

Does the cleaning fluid contain alcohol?

Yes, the solution is isopropanol-based and therefore highly flammable. Keep it away from heat and open flames, avoid eye contact and air the room briefly while working. For ordinary vinyl LPs this is unproblematic – alcohol only becomes critical with shellac and with certain stylus-mount adhesives.

Can I also clean shellac records with it?

No. Shellac records, meaning the old 78s, can't tolerate alcohol-based cleaners – the surface can turn dull or start to dissolve. For shellac, use distilled water with a drop of dish soap or a product explicitly approved for it. With vinyl LPs and singles, this problem doesn't exist.
