Sangean DDR-8 DAB+ Wooden Radio with Battery, Midnight Oak

The Sangean DDR-8 is a portable DAB+/FM radio in a real-wood cabinet with Bluetooth 5.2, a battery and a display that rotates for vertical or horizontal placement.

Midnight Oak is the dark oak: muted, refined and a little mysterious, like a radio that likes to play softly at night. The radio stands upright on the bedside table or lies on its side on the shelf, simply turning the display with it. A small radio that adapts to the room rather than the other way round.

Why the DDR-8?

Because it combines digital radio, alarm clock and Bluetooth in a slim wooden cabinet: DAB+ and FM with RDS, station presets, Bluetooth 5.2 (A2DP), alarm with snooze and sleep timer and an OLED display with dimmer. The lithium battery (3.7 V, 2600 mAh) lasts 18 hours in Bluetooth mode according to the manufacturer and charges via USB-C. A headphone output is included too.

What you hear

A pleasantly warm sound from the 2-inch speaker: 2 watts on DAB+ and FM, 4 watts over Bluetooth. Dynamic range control (DRC) helps keep quiet passages intelligible at room volume. Just right for news, music and the morning alarm.

Who is the DDR-8 for?

For anyone looking for a good-looking small radio for the bedroom, desk or kitchen who prefers wood to plastic. Plainly put: it plays in mono and is not built for high volume. If you want more volume, choose a larger table radio.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Sangean DDR-8 battery last?

The manufacturer states 18 hours in Bluetooth mode. The lithium battery (3.7 V, 2600 mAh) charges via USB-C. On DAB+ and FM, and at high volume, the runtime may differ; Sangean gives no separate figure.

What does the rotating display mean?

The OLED display can be rotated for a radio standing upright or lying on its side. So you can put the DDR-8 upright on the bedside table or horizontally on the shelf and the display stays readable. It adapts to your space.

Does the DDR-8 receive DAB+ and FM without a subscription?

Yes. The DDR-8 has a tuner for DAB+ (digital radio) and FM with RDS and station presets. You need no subscription for it. Bluetooth 5.2 is there in addition if you want to play your own music or podcasts from your phone.

Does the DDR-8 have a headphone output?

Yes, it has a headphone output. That lets you listen to radio or Bluetooth music just for yourself, handy in bed in the evening or in the office.

Is the cabinet real wood?

Yes, the DDR-8 comes with a real-wood cabinet. The grain differs from unit to unit, so every radio looks slightly different. That gives the sound warmth and the radio a presence that plastic cannot manage.
