Sangean DDR-7 DAB+ Wooden Radio with Battery, Glacier Silver

The Sangean DDR-7 is a compact DAB+/FM radio in a wooden cabinet with Bluetooth, an OLED display and a built-in battery.

Glacier Silver is the sober variant: a light silver-grey that blends in quietly next to hi-fi gear, books or a laptop. The real-wood-veneer cabinet is acoustically tuned and carries a speaker that can do more than you would expect for its size. Small enough for the bedside table, shelf or desk, classic enough not to look like a tech toy.

Why the DDR-7?

Because it packs today's radio technology into a retro-style case: DAB+ and FM with RDS, station presets, Bluetooth 5.0 for streaming from your phone and an AUX input for everything else. The OLED display shows station, time and battery level. The lithium battery (3.6 V, 2600 mAh) charges via Micro-USB, so the radio also plays without a socket.

What you hear

Warm, clear mono sound from the 1½-inch speaker with class D amplifier: 2 watts on mains, 1.6 watts on battery. That is enough for room volume and the morning news, not for a garden party. In return, voices sound pleasantly natural.

Who is the DDR-7 for?

For anyone looking for a small, good-looking digital radio for the bedroom, kitchen or office. Plainly put: it plays in mono, and if you want more level or stereo, look at a larger table radio. As a bedside radio with character, though, it is hard to beat.

Our verdict

The DDR-7 is a charming mini radio that hides modern technology in a wooden coat. Unsure about model or colour? HD Zürisee in Wädenswil is happy to advise you, by phone +41 44 680 22 00, WhatsApp 076 534 22 00 (text only, no calls) or email shop@hdzuerisee.ch.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Sangean DDR-7 have a battery?

Yes. The DDR-7 contains a rechargeable lithium battery (18650, 3.6 V, 2600 mAh), charged via Micro-USB. The radio therefore plays without a socket, for example from the kitchen to the balcony. The manufacturer gives no runtime figure.

Is the cabinet really made of wood?

The cabinet is acoustically tuned and finished in real wood veneer. Depending on the colour variant, the grain is more or less visible. That gives the sound a warmth you do not find in plastic radios of this size.

Does the DDR-7 receive DAB+ and FM?

Yes, both. The DDR-7 has a tuner for DAB+ (digital radio) and classic FM with RDS and station presets. You need no subscription for it. Over Bluetooth 5.0 or AUX you can also play your own music.

Does the DDR-7 play in stereo?

No. The DDR-7 has a single speaker and plays in mono. For room volume, news and background music that is perfectly fine; if you want stereo you need a larger system.

Can I use it with an external antenna?

Yes. Besides the supplied FM wire antenna, the DDR-7 has a 3.5 mm socket for an external FM antenna. That helps with weak FM reception. For DAB+, the usual reception conditions of your region apply.
