The Canton Townus 30 is a 2-way bookshelf speaker with a bass-reflex enclosure in real walnut veneer.
174 mm of titanium below, 25 mm of ceramic above, plus a wood finish that passes as furniture in a living room rather than as equipment. The Townus 30 is supplied as a pair.
Why the Canton Townus 30?
The walnut veneer is the visible part of the answer – the audible part is inside the driver. The 154 mm mid-woofer works with a titanium diaphragm and a triple-folded wave surround that guides long excursions cleanly. That's exactly where the bass down to 38 Hz comes from, bass you wouldn't initially credit a housing this size with. From 3,000 Hz, the 25 mm aluminium-oxide ceramic dome takes over and continues up to 40,000 Hz. The reflex port sits at the rear, the drivers are integrated screwless.
What you hear
A warm, substantial foundation with clearly defined voices and a treble that doesn't tire even after the third album. The Townus 30 delivers enough level for living-room volume while staying composed. On a stand with open space behind it, it paints a soundstage that reaches beyond the speakers themselves – in a cramped shelf compartment, that exact effect shrinks.
Who is the Canton Townus 30 for?
Straight talk: the walnut version is the choice when gloss lacquer or white doesn't suit your furniture – for stereo in small to medium rooms, on a stand or an open sideboard, and equally as a front or surround pair in a home cinema. It's not suited to large open spaces with high level demands; that calls for a floorstander or a subwoofer. And there's no bi-wiring here, the Townus 30 has a single-wiring terminal.
Our verdict
Sonically identical to its lacquered siblings, visually the warmest of the three finishes – anyone with wood already in the room will reach for this one. The Townus 30 is one of those speakers people underestimate until it's properly set up. What that means specifically for you is something we'd rather work out together at HD Zürisee beforehand, instead of you experimenting with electronics afterward.

Frequently asked questions
Is the walnut housing real wood veneer?
Yes, Canton veneers the Townus 30 with real walnut. Grain and shade therefore vary slightly from pair to pair, as is normal with a natural material. The finish has no effect on the sound – housing construction, drivers and tuning are identical across all three versions.
How much amplifier power does the Townus 30 need?
It handles 90 watts rated and 140 watts music power at a nominal impedance of 4 to 8 ohms. What matters is less the wattage than your amplifier's stability into 4 ohms. A solid mid-range integrated amplifier suits it very well – we're happy to take a look at what you already have.
Do I absolutely need speaker stands?
Not absolutely, but it makes a lot of sense. On a stand, the tweeter sits at ear height and the rear reflex port gets air. An open sideboard with a good 28 cm of depth also works, as long as some distance from the wall remains. We'd advise against mounting it in a closed shelf compartment, though.
Why buy the Canton Townus 30 at HD Zürisee?
Because with us, it's not the catalogue that decides, it's your room. We go through with you what placement, amplifier and cabling actually deliver, deliver and set up at your place – and we'll tell you too if a cheaper model turns out to be the smarter solution.
Goes well with
The Townus 30 really comes into its own on speaker stands, driven by an integrated amplifier with headroom. If you're missing depth, a subwoofer fills the gap; you'll find every other bookshelf speaker in the overview.
