The Argon Audio SA1 MK2 is a compact integrated amplifier with a built-in DAC, phono MM stage and HDMI ARC, combining power amplification and source management in a housing just 22 centimetres wide. It's designed as the control centre of a small system: TV, turntable, computer and phone all run through a single device. Little footprint, remarkably little compromise.

Why the SA1 MK2?

The Class D power stage delivers 2 × 100 watts at 4 ohms and 2 × 50 watts at 8 ohms — enough headroom that bookshelf speakers in a normal living room aren't constantly maxed out. The digital side is handled by a 32-bit ESS Sabre converter running fully balanced, resolving up to 24 bit/192 kHz at the optical input. THD under 0.03 percent, frequency response from 3 to 60,000 hertz: figures you wouldn't guess from the slim housing.

What you get

HDMI ARC takes in the TV and can be controlled via CEC using its remote, the optical input handles a streaming box or games console, RCA covers the rest. The phono MM input saves you a separate phono stage. Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX and aptX HD brings the phone on board in good quality, and the Pre Out passes the signal on to an active subwoofer or a bigger power amp. No running costs involved: vinyl, TV sound and computer all play without a subscription.

Who is the SA1 MK2 suited for — and who isn't it for?

Honestly: the SA1 MK2 doesn't do network streaming. If you're expecting AirPlay, Spotify Connect or multiroom over Wi-Fi, reach for the sister model SA2 instead. You'll also look in vain for a headphone output — headphones run here via a separate amplifier on the Pre Out. But if you want to bring TV, turntable and phone together in one device without sacrificing half a sideboard for it, you're in exactly the right place.

Our verdict

The SA1 MK2 solves a problem many living rooms have: lots of sources, little space, no need for a stack of components. It does that without any showmanship and with clean measurements. Whether it suits your speakers and whether the SA1 MK2 or the SA2 is the right choice, we can sort out on the phone in five minutes — HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, 044 680 22 00 or WhatsApp 076 534 22 00 (text only, no calls).

Frequently asked questions

Does the Argon Audio SA1 MK2 have Wi-Fi streaming?

No. The SA1 MK2 transmits wirelessly exclusively via Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX, aptX HD and AAC. You'll find AirPlay, Spotify Connect or multiroom over the network on the sister model SA2. All wired sources, on the other hand, the SA1 MK2 plays back in full, from the TV to the turntable.

Can I connect a turntable directly to the SA1 MK2?

Yes, via the phono MM input. A turntable with an MM cartridge doesn't need a separate phono stage, you just plug it straight in. For MC cartridges you'll additionally need a suitable phono preamp. The auto-on deliberately doesn't kick in for phono — you switch that on by hand.

Does the SA1 MK2 have a headphone output?

No, there's no headphone jack. If you regularly listen with headphones, connect a headphone amplifier to the Pre Out, which passes the signal on with level control. For anyone who mostly listens over speakers, that doesn't matter day to day.

Why buy the SA1 MK2 from HD Zürisee?

Because an amplifier has to suit the room, the speakers and the sources — and the question of SA1 MK2 or SA2 is usually settled in conversation, not in a table. We advise you without sales pressure, take care of installation and service with our own technician, and stay reachable after the purchase too.

Goes well with

An amplifier needs playing partners: bookshelf speakers in the right size, a turntable for the phono input, decent cable in between — or a wander through the whole Argon Audio world.
