EMT HSD SC6 MC Cartridge for Subchassis

The EMT HSD SC6 is an MC cartridge that EMT has specifically tuned for turntables with a sprung subchassis.

This isn't a label slapped on a standard cartridge, but a real adaptation: lighter housing, softer stylus suspension. Both ensure that the tonearm-cartridge resonance and the deck's suspension don't get in each other's way. Like the larger EMT systems, the SC6 is hand-built in Switzerland.

Why the HSD SC6?

A sprung deck is a system that's designed to oscillate. Put a heavy cartridge with a stiff suspension on it and two resonances move dangerously close together — the result is wandering bass, unsettled tracking and an arm that reacts to every footstep across the room. The SC6 tackles this from the other side: just 10 grams, plus a stylus compliance of 15 µm/mN.

That puts it in a clean window on the light-to-medium arms typical of sprung decks — such as THORENS' subchassis models. It shares generator, diamond and connector with the HSD 006, so the EMT heritage remains clearly recognizable.

What you get

A Super Fineline diamond on an aluminum cantilever, a coil of 4N copper and a nickel-plated AlNiCo magnet in an aluminum housing. Sonically that means: an open, well-sorted top end without hiss, voices with flesh on their bones, and bass that finally keeps contour instead of floating on a sprung deck.

At 1 mV output voltage, the SC6 is almost gentle for a moving coil. On an MC input with 200 to 300 ohms termination it runs without contortions, and its 2.0-gram tracking force is easier still on a sprung suspension.

Who is the HSD SC6 for?

For anyone whose deck stands on springs and whose tonearm isn't among the really heavy ones. Bluntly: on a solid, rigid deck with a heavy arm, the SC6 is the wrong partner — that's where the slightly heavier, stiffer HSD 006 belongs. Our verdict

The SC6 solves a problem many vinyl listeners never even recognized as a problem — they simply wondered why their sprung deck didn't sound better with an expensive MC. Frequently asked questions

Which turntables is the EMT HSD SC6 designed for?

For decks with a sprung subchassis, i.e. the classic design with a floating platter and tonearm carrier. At 10 grams and 15 µm/mN compliance, the SC6 puts little strain on the suspension and keeps its resonance well clear of the suspension's working range. On rigid mass-loaded decks, the HSD 006 is the better fit.

What phono input does the HSD SC6 need?

An MC input with 200 to 300 ohms termination impedance, or a suitable step-up transformer. The output voltage is 1 mV at 5 cm/s, the internal resistance 2 × 24 ohms. That makes the SC6 uncomplicated for a moving coil and places no extreme demands on your phono stage's gain.

Why is higher stylus compliance important on a subchassis deck?

Because tonearm and cartridge together form a spring-mass system. If its resonance sits too close to the natural frequency of the subchassis suspension, the two build on each other. The SC6's softer suspension shifts the resonance to where it belongs: between outside disturbances and the lowest musical signals.

Can I mount the HSD SC6 myself?

In principle, yes, but it only comes out clean with a template and a scale. What matters are overhang, offset angle, azimuth and the 2.0-gram tracking force; with sprung decks, leveling the subchassis is an extra step.
