Benz Micro Zebra M MC Cartridge, Medium Output

The Benz Micro Zebra M is a medium-output MC cartridge in a zebrawood body, handmade in Switzerland.
It's the diplomat of the Zebra family: enough output for phono stages that can't muster 60 dB, without any compromise in the build. Same wood, same boron cantilever, same line-contact diamond as the L – just 0.8 instead of 0.4 mV, at 24 instead of 12 Ω.
Why the Zebra M?
The 0.8 mV is tailored to phono stages with 45 to 58 dB of gain – the range where many good tube and transistor stages live. You get the full Benz wood sound without having to push your preamp right up to its noise limit. The milled, vented zebrawood body keeps resonances in check, and the pure iron cross armature delivers the typical warmth in the midrange.
What you experience
The same rich, organic tonal foundation as the L, plus a bit more composure on less sensitive inputs. Voices stand tangibly in the room, strings have wood and rosin, bass stays dry and defined. A cartridge for long evenings with a stack of records – not for measurement charts.
Who is the Zebra M for?
For anyone whose phono stage sits in the middle gain range, often tube stages. Honestly: if you have a high-gain MC stage from 60 dB up, the Zebra L is the more consistent choice; if you only have an MM input, there's no way around the H. The M is exactly right when your input falls in between – and that happens more often than the datasheets suggest.
Our verdict
The pragmatic Zebra: uncompromising in sound, pleasantly relaxed when it comes to choosing a preamp. For many real-world systems, it's the variant with the fewest question marks – and the lowest odds that you'll need a new phono stage down the line after all.

Frequently asked questions
What phono stage is the Zebra M made for?
For phono stages with 45 to 58 dB of gain, often tube stages. At 0.8 mV, the Zebra M sits between the low-output L and the MM-compatible H. The load can be anywhere between 100 Ω and 47 kΩ. Tell us your device and we'll tell you whether the pairing works.
Does the Zebra M sound different from the Zebra L?
Not in basic character – body, boron cantilever, line-contact diamond and generator principle are the same. The difference lies in output level and internal impedance, i.e. in the matching preamp. At its ideal input, the M works just as warm and colourful as the L does at its own. The right pairing is what counts.
What load resistance should I set?
Benz specifies 100 Ω to 47 kΩ – deliberately a wide range. In practice, the Zebra M already sounds very balanced on many stages at 470 Ω to 1 kΩ; noticeably lower values take air out of the treble. Work through your preamp's settings one by one.
What tracking force is recommended?
1.7 to 2.0 g, optimal 1.7 to 1.8 g. Set the force with a scale directly at record height, not by the scale on the counterweight. Tracking too lightly harms the groove more than a tenth of a gram too much – and the Zebra M rewards you with stable tracking.
Why buy the Zebra M at HD Zürisee?
Because we tell you which Zebra variant suits your phono stage, instead of leaving you to guess. Our experienced team in Wädenswil handles mounting and alignment on request, and we're still there after the purchase whenever questions about the setup come up.
Goes well with
Ideally complemented by a phono preamp in the middle gain range, a matching turntable and clean cables. You'll find the brand's other cartridges under BENZ Micro, care and alignment aids in Accessories. We'll put the chain together for you – just send us a message.
