The Valvet I4 is a Class A integrated amplifier that combines two complete power amps and a passive preamp in a single chassis.

In essence, the I4 has two Valvet A4.5 mono power amps inside it – except they share one chassis, one 500 VA toroidal transformer, and one power cable. The preamp stage ahead of them is deliberately passive: no extra amplifier stage in the signal path, just a 64-position stepped attenuator that adjusts volume in fine increments. If you want the uncompromising Class A power amp but can't or don't want to fit two separate chassis in the rack, this is exactly where you land.

Why the Valvet I4?

Because it shows that “integrated amplifier” doesn't automatically mean “compromise”. Both channels run completely independently in Class A operation, each with its own capacitor bank per channel and Teflon-insulated pure silver wire throughout the signal path. Four RCA inputs with silver-plated sockets, WBT speaker terminals, and a Furutech rhodium mains inlet round out the picture – components you'd otherwise expect to find in separate preamp/power-amp combinations, not in a “simple” integrated amplifier.

What you hear

The typical Valvet signature: warm, controlled, with plenty of calm in the bass and a soundstage that invites rather than crowds. The passive preamp adds nothing to the signal that wasn't already there – which benefits transparency, but in turn demands a source with sufficient output level. The OLED display and remote control for input selection and 64 volume steps still make everyday use comfortable, no compromise for the sake of purist looks.

Who is the I4 for – and who isn't it for?

Straight talk: the I4 is for anyone who wants the sound of two A4.5 power amps but wants just one chassis in the rack, or one less cable to run. For anyone switching from active speakers, or expecting streaming built directly into the amplifier, it's the wrong candidate – there's neither a network module nor a DAC here, only pure analogue technology. If you already own a capable external preamp, buying the I4 also means buying a preamp you don't actually need – in that case, the separate A4.5 monos or the E3 are the more consistent choice.

Our verdict

An integrated amplifier for people who actually wanted a power-amp combination but decided on one chassis – without having to compromise on sound for it. Tell us which speakers and which source you're running, and we'll look together at whether 40 or 70 watts is enough and how best to integrate the I4 into your system.

Frequently asked questions

What makes the Valvet I4 special?

It combines two complete Class A power amps – identical in design to the Valvet A4.5 – with a passive preamp in one chassis. Instead of an extra amplifier stage ahead of the power amps, a 64-position stepped attenuator adjusts the volume directly, without further amplifying or colouring the signal.

Do I still need an external preamp?

No. The passive preamp is already built in and controllable via remote. What matters is just that your source delivers enough output level, since a passive preamp doesn't raise the signal, only attenuates it.

What's the difference between the version with and without control knobs?

Purely visual and tactile: both variants work identically on a technical level and can be fully controlled via the included remote. With control knobs, you can additionally set input and volume directly on the unit.

How is the volume controlled?

Via a mechanical 64-position stepped attenuator – the same principle Valvet also uses in its preamps and power amps. This avoids the channel imbalance of classic potentiometers at low levels.

Where does the Valvet I4 come from?

Valvet manufactures by hand in northern Germany, in small batches rather than on an assembly line. Signal routing, wiring, and transformer winding are done in-house, not at an external supplier.

Why buy the Valvet I4 from HD Zürisee?

Because an integrated amplifier in this class needs to match the right speakers for the effort to pay off. We advise you in Wädenswil on the combination, on cable choice, and take care of installation with our own technician if needed.

Goes well with: matching floorstanding speakers or bookshelf speakers and the right cables to connect them.
