The Yamaha True X Bar 40A (SR-X40A) is a 2.1.2-channel soundbar with genuine Dolby Atmos that brings height sounds into the room via upward-firing drivers – without separate ceiling speakers.
It's the entry point into Yamaha's True X world: a slim bar, integrated dual subwoofers, and the option to later expand it wirelessly into a genuine surround system. In Light Grey, it blends in unobtrusively under the TV instead of dominating as a black bar.
Why the True X Bar 40A?
Because here, Dolby Atmos isn't simulated but generated by genuine height drivers. Two upward-firing drivers throw the sound up to the ceiling and back down to you – rain, helicopters, explosions come noticeably from above. Two built-in subwoofers plus Bass Extension supply the foundation, with no external box needed. And because it's a True X, the path to full surround stays open.
What You Hear
180 W spread across six drivers (front, height, subwoofer, each a pair), four sound modes, and a clean Atmos effect via HDMI eARC. You stream music over Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect, or quickly via Bluetooth – with no obligation to subscribe to anything; internet radio and your own network files play too. Alexa is built in, controlled via the remote or the Sound Bar Controller app.
Who Is the True X Bar 40A For? (And Who Isn't It For – Straight Talk)
Ideal if you want genuine Atmos without cable clutter and want to keep the option open to upgrade to surround later. Honestly: the 40A is the middle tier – if you're after maximum level and the strongest height channels, go for the larger True X Bar 50A. For really deep cinema bass, the additional subwoofer True X Sub 100A is recommended. For most living rooms, the 40A hits the sweet spot of sound, size and price.
Our Verdict
One of the most uncomplicated ways to bring genuine Dolby Atmos into your living room – slim, network-capable and expandable. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we'll show you how the 40A can be expanded with rear speakers and a sub into full True X surround, whenever you want more.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the True X Bar 40A produce genuine Dolby Atmos?
Yes. The 40A has two upward-firing height drivers that reflect the sound off the ceiling – that's genuine Dolby Atmos, not a pure simulation. The effect works best in rooms with a flat, smooth ceiling.
Do I need an additional subwoofer?
No, two subwoofers are already built in. For noticeable cinema bass in a larger room, the wireless True X Sub 100A can be added. For a normal living room, the bar alone is more than adequate.
Can I expand the 40A to surround?
Yes. Via True X Surround, you wirelessly connect two True X Speakers as rear speakers and the True X Sub 100A. This turns the soundbar step by step into a full surround system – without cables running across the room.
Do I need to take out a subscription for music?
No. If you like streaming, Spotify Connect, Tidal, AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth all work. Just as well, you can play internet radio or files from your home network – with no paid subscription at all. You decide what you use.
