The Ruark Audio Sabre R is a passive 2-way bookshelf speaker that combines a 15 cm natural-fibre cone with a 26 mm silk dome tweeter in a veneer-finished compact cabinet – developed as the sonic partner to the R610 music console.
In 1985 Ruark launched the original Sabre – now the name returns, thoroughly modernised. The Sabre R is deliberately kept compact and built to the same furniture quality as the 100 Series. It's passive, so not an active speaker, and needs an amplifier – naturally it pairs perfectly with the Ruark R610, but it's equally at home with any decent amplifier.
Why the Sabre R?
At its core is a 2-way system: a 15 cm bass/mid driver with a treated natural-fibre cone and a 26 mm silk dome tweeter with neodymium motor. The braced, damped MDF cabinet with a twin-flared bass-reflex port keeps resonance low and delivers clean, unobtrusive bass from a surprisingly small volume. The magnetic grille can be removed, and the gold-plated double terminals allow single or bi-wiring.
What you'll hear
The Sabre R plays full and balanced – with a bass foundation you wouldn't expect from such a compact cabinet, and treble that's clear but never harsh. It suits any genre and is ideal for small to medium rooms, apartments, an office or a second system. With 86 dB sensitivity and 6 ohms, it's easy to drive; 25 to 100 watts is recommended.
Plain talk: the Sabre R isn't built for stadium-level output in a large, open loft – that's what floorstanding speakers are for. In normal living spaces, though, it plays noticeably bigger than it looks. And yes, it needs an amplifier: the natural partner is the Ruark R610, but any solid integrated amplifier will do just as well.
Who is the Sabre R for?
Ideal if you want a compact, living-room-ready speaker that looks as good as it sounds – on a stand, on a shelf, or as the visual match to the R610. Perfect for small to medium rooms and anyone who cares about furniture-grade quality.
Who it's not for: if you want to fill a large room with deep bass power, go for floorstanding speakers or add a subwoofer. And if you're after a ready-made active solution without a separate amplifier, take a look at Ruark's active systems instead, such as the R410 or the R610 set.
Our verdict
The Sabre R is a small speaker built with great care: crafted to the standard of fine furniture, honestly and evenly balanced in sound, and a visually and sonically coherent pairing with the R610. If you're after compact speakers with character and clean build quality, you can hardly go wrong here. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil we'll help you find the right amplifier and the right placement to go with it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Ruark Sabre R active or passive?
The Sabre R is a passive speaker – it needs an amplifier. It has no built-in power amp. The natural partner is the Ruark R610 music console, but any solid integrated amplifier with 25 to 100 watts drives it without any trouble.
Does the Sabre R match the Ruark R610?
Yes, perfectly – the two were developed together. Matched visually to furniture quality and tuned sonically to each other: the R610 delivers 2× 75 watts, and the Sabre R, at 6 ohms and 86 dB, is easy to drive. Together they make a complete, compact system.
What room size suits the Sabre R?
The Sabre R is made for small to medium rooms – an apartment, office, bedroom or living room. Thanks to a well-tuned bass-reflex cabinet, it plays bigger than it looks. In very large, open spaces, floorstanding speakers or an additional subwoofer are the better choice.
Do I need speaker stands for the Sabre R?
Recommended, but not essential. The Sabre R sits just as well on a shelf or sideboard as on a stand. For the best soundstage, the tweeters should sit roughly at ear height – a suitable speaker stand helps with that and cleanly decouples the cabinet from the furniture.
