The stereo music consoles of the 1970s made the hi-fi world great; the R610 brings that idea back – just with streaming, Burr-Brown converters and HDMI instead of tape. A special feature for Ruark: there are no drivers inside the R610. It's the electronics hub, you bring the speakers. Sounds like half a system, but that's exactly the point – you choose the sound instead of having it dictated to you.

Why the R610?

At its core works a Class D power stage with 2× 75 watts, which has enough headroom for most bookshelf speakers and efficient floorstanders. Digital-to-analog conversion is handled by Burr-Brown converters that process hi-res files up to 32-bit/384 kHz – a converter class otherwise found in far larger separate components.

Connection-wise, the R610 is a switching hub: HDMI ARC/eARC for the TV, an MM phono input for the turntable (no separate preamp needed), optical, line-in and USB-C. Via the selectable line/pre-out it drives passive speakers or passes the signal on to a larger power amp; a subwoofer output is there too. Control is via the characteristic RotoDial, a 5-inch colour TFT and the rechargeable wireless remote control.

What you hear

With matching speakers, the R610 delivers a controlled, natural sound with substance – the strength of the Burr-Brown converters becomes audible especially with hi-res material via Qobuz or Tidal. The switchable Stereo+ function widens the soundstage when the speakers have to stand a bit too close together by design. Streaming runs via Spotify, Tidal and Qobuz Connect, AirPlay 2 and Google Cast; plus internet radio, DAB/DAB+ and FM – and, without any streaming subscription at all, via turntable, CD (via the R-CD100) or local network files.

Bottom line: the R610 is pure electronics – without speakers it stays silent. The 2× 75 watts are ideal for demanding bookshelf speakers and efficient floorstanders; the natural partners are the Ruark Sabre R. Anyone wanting to fill a large hall with huge, low-efficiency speakers is better off with a separate power amp – the R610 is designed for precision and living-room use, not stadium levels.

Who is the R610 for?

Ideal if you want a beautiful single-box hub that drives your own or freely chosen speakers – for the living room, as a high-quality TV upgrade via HDMI, or as a stylish centrepiece for vinyl and streaming. If you value design and flexibility equally, this is the one.

Who it's not for: if you want a finished system with sound straight out of the unit, go for the R410 or R810 with built-in speakers. If you want to play CDs directly, add the Ruark R-CD100 (the R610 itself has no drive). And there's no dedicated control app – it's controlled via the native streaming apps, RotoDial and remote control.

Does the Ruark R610 have built-in speakers?
No. The R610 is pure electronics – a streaming amplifier with 2× 75 watts but no drivers of its own. You connect passive speakers of your choice, for example the matching Ruark Sabre R. If you want sound straight out of the unit, check out the R410 or R810.

Which speakers suit the R610?
The 2× 75 watts confidently drive most bookshelf speakers and efficient floorstanders. The natural partner is the Ruark Sabre R, but the R610 also pairs well with many other passive speakers. For very large, low-efficiency speakers, a separate power amp is the better choice.

Can I connect a turntable directly?
Yes. The R610 has a built-in MM phono input. Turntables with a moving-magnet cartridge can be plugged in directly – no separate phono preamp is needed. For moving-coil cartridges you need a suitable MC preamp in front of it. This way you play vinyl through your system without any extra device.

Can I connect the R610 to my TV?
Yes, via HDMI ARC/eARC. The R610 reproduces TV sound in stereo and can conveniently be controlled via the TV remote. Combined with good speakers, that's an audible upgrade over most TV and soundbar speakers.

Does the R610 play CDs?
Not directly – the R610 has no built-in drive. But via the USB-C connection you can add the matching Ruark R-CD100 CD player, which matches the 100 Series in look and technology. That turns the R610 into a full-fledged CD player too.
