EMT TSD SFL Cartridge, Stereo MC with SFL Diamond

The EMT TSD SFL is a stereo cartridge with a Super Fineline diamond that carries the classic EMT generator in a body milled from solid magnesium and remains fully compatible with the earlier TSD 15.

At EMT, "cartridge" (Tondose) means generator, cantilever and housing form a single unit, built for everyday studio use, not for a display case. Within the TSD family, the SFL is the sensitive variant — the Super Fineline cut sits narrower and deeper in the groove than a spherical stylus and still reads overtones where coarser cuts have long since generalized over them.

Why the EMT TSD SFL?

Because it brings together two things that rarely come together: the substantial, unfussy EMT tone from the broadcast studio, and a stylus cut that tracks up to 25,000 Hz. The aluminum-boron cantilever keeps the diamond steady, the magnesium body gives the construction the stiffness without which any fine resolution would be lost in the housing. Add to that the range's practical virtue: it's available with EMT connection, as INT (Ortofon A) or as X (SME) — so it isn't limited to EMT turntables.

What you hear

Spatial order and texture. Strings get bow instead of haze, cymbals get an attack with decay, voices sit calmly between the speakers. At 0.21 mVs/cm, the TSD SFL delivers strong output for an MC system — your phono stage doesn't have to push to its last noise limit. At 200 to 300 Ohm load it sounds balanced; loading it markedly lower takes away exactly the air you're buying it for.

Who is the TSD SFL for?

For anyone with plenty of well-preserved stereo pressings and a medium-to-heavy tonearm: 17.5 g weight, 2.5 g tracking force and 12 µm/mN compliance are a clear statement against light little arms. Straight talk: on a distinctly light tonearm this won't be a happy match. If you mostly listen to early stereo pressings or records with visible groove wear, the spherical sibling TSD SPH gives you a calmer ride. And genuine mono records belong on a mono cartridge, not on the SFL.

Our verdict

The TSD SFL is the all-rounder of the TSD range: refined enough for good pressings, robust enough for everyday use, and thanks to three connection variants, fittable into a surprising number of turntables. Frequently asked questions

Does the EMT TSD SFL fit every tonearm?

Not every one. At 17.5 grams weight, 2.5 grams tracking force and a compliance of 12 µm/mN, it belongs on a medium-to-heavy tonearm. It's available with EMT connection, as INT for Ortofon A mounts, and as X in SME length. Tell us your tonearm model and we'll sort out the right variant.

What phono preamp does the TSD SFL need?

An MC-capable input with 200 to 300 Ohm load impedance. The transfer level of 0.21 mVs/cm corresponds to roughly 1.05 millivolts at 5 cm/s, which sits at the upper end for MC systems, so many phono stages and step-up transformers handle it well. What's the difference between the TSD SFL and the TSD SPH?

The stylus cut, and with it the intended use. The SFL carries a Super Fineline diamond and tracks up to 25,000 Hz, ideal for well-preserved stereo pressings. The SPH works with a spherical 15 µm diamond, is more forgiving of older grooves and reaches up to 20,000 Hz. Generator, weight and tracking force are identical.

Is the TSD SFL compatible with the older TSD 15?

Yes. EMT lists the TSD SFL as a fully compatible successor to the TSD 15, mounting dimensions and connection stay the same. So you can swap it directly. If your turntable is still running an old cartridge, we'll first check which of the three connection variants is actually fitted.
