EMT JSD Pure Black MC Cartridge, Copper Coil

The EMT JSD Pure Black is an MC cartridge with a sapphire cantilever and a generator coil of pure copper in a black anodized aluminum body.

It's the entry point into the EMT reference class and, at 10 grams, the lightest of the three systems — the one that makes the fewest demands on your tonearm. Honestly: most systems get more out of this one than out of a heavier system that doesn't suit the arm.

Why the JSD Pure Black?

The cantilever here is made entirely of sapphire, not a titanium/sapphire combination as in the Novel series — stiff, light, and without deformation of its own. It carries the same MR HP diamond: a multi-radius cut with multiple rounded facets, polished to the highest degree, that reaches deeper into the groove than any elliptical stylus. The pure copper (4N) coil delivers the warm, harmonically rich base tone this system is known for; if you prefer something more open, the same mechanics are available with a pure silver coil as the "AG" version. The black anodized aluminum body is finished with a high-density coating that damps resonances between cartridge and tonearm.

What you hear

Color, flow, and a very quiet background. The Pure Black doesn't overstate the top or the bottom, it plays it on texture instead: the pluck of a string, the breath before a note, the decay in the recording space. At 1.05 mV it delivers above-average output for an MC system, which makes noise a non-issue — and at 2.4 grams tracking force it sits stable in the groove, even on old pressings that have seen better days.

Who is the JSD Pure Black for?

For vinyl listeners who want to step up from a solid mid-range system into the reference class, without swapping the tonearm at the same time. Straight talk: if you want analytical sharpness and maximum neutrality, go for the Novel Titan; if you want power and big tone colors, go for the Novel Gold. And a sapphire cantilever is brittle — if someone in your household regularly handles the tonearm unsupervised, plan for a stylus replacement from the start.

The most balanced of the three EMT systems and the one with the broadest tonearm compatibility. It doesn't do anything wrong, it does a lot very right, and it doesn't force you into any further purchases. What's the difference between the JSD Pure Black and the AG version?

Just the coil. The standard version uses pure copper (4N) and sounds a touch warmer and rounder, the variant marked AG uses a pure silver coil and sounds more open in the treble. Mechanically, in the diamond and cantilever, both are identical. Tell us which direction you're after.

What tracking force and load impedance does the JSD Pure Black need?

EMT recommends 2.4 grams tracking force and 200 to 300 Ohm load impedance. The tracking force is a bit higher than on the Novel series, and the impedance matches the internal impedance of 2 × 24 Ohm. Set both properly, or you'll give away exactly the calm you're paying for.

What does a sapphire cantilever offer over aluminum?

Sapphire is significantly stiffer than aluminum and doesn't deform on its own. The cantilever therefore passes groove deflection to the generator with less distortion, especially with fine detail and in the inner grooves. The price is brittleness: a sapphire cantilever won't forgive accidents with the cleaning brush.

What turntable suits the JSD Pure Black?
