Why the JSD Novel Gold?

EMT builds the generator in two parts: the coil core sits split around a titanium carrier, which reduces eddy-current losses and makes the motor faster. On top of that sits the coil of pure gold (4N) — the softest conductor material in the series, and exactly where the rich, colorful base character comes from. The titanium/sapphire cantilever is stiffer than boron and lighter than a solid diamond cantilever; it gives the MR-HP stylus a foundation that doesn't flex even under heavy excursions. The high-density housing isn't a piece of jewelry, either — it's a working tool: it channels kinetic energy off into the tonearm instead of letting it ring inside the cartridge.

What you hear

The Novel Gold has body. Voices gain chest resonance, brass gets shine without harshness, double basses stand in the room as an instrument rather than a frequency band. The MR-HP cut — a multiply-rounded, multi-radius diamond in the highest polish grade — reaches deep into the groove and still pulls detail out of heavily modulated inner grooves, where simpler cuts have long given up. And because the generator delivers a comparatively strong 1 mV for an MC system, the phono stage's noise stays exactly where it belongs: inaudible.

Who is the JSD Novel Gold for?

For vinyl listeners with a serious deck, and above all a serious tonearm. Bluntly: 18 grams is a lot. The Novel Gold wants a heavy, well-damped arm with matching effective mass — on a light entry-level tonearm you waste its potential, or the counterweight doesn't even reach balance. If you rank tonal neutrality above color, you'll be happier with the Novel Titan. And if your records mostly play in the background, honestly, you're buying more cartridge here than you'll ever hear.

A heavy, high-quality tonearm. With 18 grams of self-weight and a compliance of 12 µm/mN, the Novel Gold suits arms of medium to high effective mass. Check beforehand whether your counterweight can even balance the 18 grams — on light tonearms, the adjustment range is often not enough.

Do I need a step-up transformer for the JSD Novel Gold?

Usually not. At 1 mV output voltage, it's comparatively high for an MC system; a normal MC input with 100 to 200 ohms termination impedance is enough. A step-up transformer is therefore a tone-color decision rather than a necessity — we'll take a look at your existing phono stage with you.

What's the difference between the JSD Novel Gold and the JSD Novel Titan?

Coil, housing and weight. The Gold carries a pure gold coil in a high-density, gold-plated housing and weighs 18 grams at 2 × 20 ohms internal impedance. The Titan uses a silver coil in DLC-coated titanium, weighs 13 grams and measures 2 × 16 ohms.

What do the abbreviations JSD and MR HP stand for?

JSD stands for Jubilee Stereo Diamond, MR for Multi Radius and HP for High Polish. The diamond is therefore a multiply-rounded cut in the highest polish grade. According to the datasheet, EMT manufactures the systems in Switzerland and has consistently carried this naming convention forward for decades.
