The EMT HSD 006 is an MC cartridge that carries the generator of EMT's studio systems over into a housing for common hi-fi tonearms.

EMT has been building pickup systems for decades that had to work every day in the broadcast studio, not just look good. The HSD 006 carries exactly that heritage with it: hand-built in Switzerland, red anodized aluminum housing, AlNiCo magnet, a Super Fineline diamond on an aluminum cantilever. No component is fitted that doesn't earn its keep.

Why the HSD 006?

Because it brings the EMT signature into a format that works on a normal turntable. The classic studio systems come with a fixed headshell and need an arm built for that. The HSD 006, on the other hand, is an ordinary cartridge with a 1/2-inch mount and four connector pins — it fits any tonearm with a standard mounting pattern.

Add to that an output voltage of 1.05 mV at 5 cm/s. That's strong for a moving coil, and it takes the pressure off the phono input: you don't need an amplification stage working at the edge of its capabilities just to get the music through without a carpet of noise.

What you hear

The Super Fineline cut sits deep in the groove and still reads the inner grooves cleanly — exactly where simpler diamonds start to struggle. What strikes you first is the calm: voices stand firmly between the speakers, brass gets body instead of edge, and the bass line stays a sequence of notes instead of a thud.

The EMT generator delivers substance rather than effect. If you've been running a cartridge with a pronounced, sharp top end, the HSD 006 can seem almost unspectacular at first — until you notice that two record sides have played straight through without anyone touching the volume.

Who is the HSD 006 for?

For turntables with a rigid plinth and a tonearm of medium effective mass: 12 grams of self-weight and a compliance of 12 µm/mN give you a clean resonance window there. Bluntly: on a sprung subchassis deck it's only the second-best choice — EMT has the lighter HSD SC6 in the lineup for that. And if you're running a phono stage without an MC input and without a step-up transformer, sort that out first, or even the finest cartridge stays mute.

Our verdict

The HSD 006 isn't a cartridge for spec-sheet collectors, but for people who actually play their records. It demands clean alignment and a decent phono stage, and it repays that with a maturity you'd otherwise only find much further up the price list. What termination impedance does the EMT HSD 006 need?

The HSD 006 wants to see 200 to 300 ohms, so an MC input or a suitable step-up transformer. Its output voltage of 1.05 mV at 5 cm/s is comparatively strong for a moving coil, so it also gets along with phono stages that don't bring the very last reserve of gain. The internal resistance is 2 × 24 ohms.

Does the HSD 006 fit my tonearm?

Mathematically, yes, if your tonearm has a medium effective mass. At 12 grams of self-weight and a compliance of 12 µm/mN, the HSD 006 lands in a clean resonance window on arms in the roughly nine-to-fourteen-gram range. For very light or very heavy arms, we'd rather work through the numbers together with you.

What's the right tracking force?

EMT specifies 2.4 grams, and that's not a rough guideline but the actual operating point. Set the tracking force with a scale rather than by the arm's dial, and check it again after the first hours of use. Too light and the diamond sounds thin and edgy; too heavy and it chokes the dynamics.

What's the difference between the HSD 006 and the HSD SC6?

Both share the generator, diamond cut and mount. The HSD 006 weighs 12 grams at 12 µm/mN compliance and is meant for conventional, rigid decks. The HSD SC6 weighs 10 grams at 15 µm/mN and is tuned for sprung subchassis decks. If that's what you have, the SC6 is the better fit.
