Why brush at all?

Because dust in the groove doesn't just sit there – it gets ploughed in by the stylus. What you hear as quiet crackle is, to a good extent, simply dirt, and every play works it in deeper. Carbon fibres are fine enough to reach right down to the bottom of the groove, where a cloth only wipes the surface. Frequently asked questions

How much pressure do you need when brushing?

As little as possible – the brush's own weight is entirely enough. Press down hard and the fine fibres bend sideways and no longer reach the bottom of the groove; you're then just wiping the surface. Let the brush ride along with the spinning platter and then pull it off gently towards the outside.

Can you use the brush with cleaning fluid?

Better not to. Carbon-fibre brushes are made for dry cleaning; fluid glues the fine fibres together and dulls them over time. For wet cleaning there are dedicated brushes, cloths and fluids – and for large collections, eventually, a record-washing machine. The two complement each other rather than replacing one another.

Why does the record still crackle despite brushing?

Then the cause runs deeper than surface dust. Dried-in residue, grease from fingerprints or leftover old cleaning agents sit in the groove wall and only come out with a wet clean. A worn stylus also leaves traces that sound like crackle – no brush in the world will get that back for you.

How do you keep the bristles themselves clean?

Wipe off the collected dust after each pass instead of carrying it onto the next record. A careful pull with your finger or against the edge of the metal trim is enough; the fibres are fine but not fragile. Store the brush protected from dust and it will serve you for years.
