Advance Paris PlayStream A7 Streaming Amplifier

The Advance Paris PlayStream A7 is the largest streaming integrated amplifier in the PlayStream lineup: network player, DAB+/FM tuner, D/A converter, phono preamp for MM and MC, HDMI ARC, and Class AB power stage in one housing.

2×115 watts into 8 ohms, six configurable analog inputs, four digital inputs, two subwoofer outputs – and two illuminated VU meters, so you can also see what you hear. This isn't a compact solution with streaming bolted on, but a complete system in one device.

Why the PlayStream A7?

The A7 is what used to be called a big system – just packed into a single housing. The Class AB power stage with High-Bias switching operates close to Class A for the first watts and has reserves even for demanding speakers. HIFITEST was thoroughly impressed in its test – design, build quality and sound were, in its conclusion, «all in the right place.» FIDELITY called the A7 a «true equipment marvel» where you don't have to sacrifice audiophile virtues.

The second reason is on the back panel: the phono input accepts MM as well as MC cartridges, HDMI ARC brings in the TV with one cable, DAB+ and FM deliver radio without a network, and two subwoofer outputs clear the way if something's still missing down low.

What you hear

Authority. The A7 doesn't sound louder than necessary, but bigger: the stage opens up in width and depth, instruments hold their place even in dense orchestral passages, and the bass stays controlled instead of loose. At room volume the High-Bias circuit provides fine detail; at higher levels the large transformer shows what it's there for. Vinyl benefits especially – the built-in MC stage is more than a token solution.

Who is the PlayStream A7 right for?

For anyone who wants a complete, powerful system in one device: large floorstanding speakers, larger rooms, vinyl with an MC cartridge, TV sound via HDMI and streaming, without having to stack three boxes.

Plain talk, who it's not for: the A7 has no CD drive – if you need that in the same housing, look at the MyConnect series or place a CD player next to it. Bluetooth isn't included from the factory either, but is an optional module. And for small rooms with bookshelf speakers, the PlayStream A1 is the more sensible – and more modestly sized – choice.

Which turntables fit the PlayStream A7?

Practically all of them: the configurable phono input supports MM as well as MC cartridges. So you don't need an external phono preamp – connect the turntable, select the cartridge type in the menu, drop the needle. The ground connection for the earth cable is present too.

Can I connect the TV to the PlayStream A7?

Yes, via HDMI ARC with a single cable. TV sound runs digitally through the A7, and you keep controlling the volume with the TV remote. Together with the two subwoofer outputs, this makes for a very grown-up stereo solution for film and music.

Can I connect headphones to the PlayStream A7?

Yes. Two jacks sit on the front: 6.35 mm for classic hi-fi headphones and 3.5 mm for smaller models. An additional headphone amp isn't needed for everyday use – late at night, you simply keep listening directly on the device.

Do I need a streaming subscription for the PlayStream A7?

No. Streaming services are one option among many. With DAB+, FM, internet radio, Phono MM/MC, HDMI ARC, USB stick and six analog inputs, the A7 is a full-fledged hi-fi hub even completely without a subscription. Ongoing costs only occur if you want them.
