The Advance Paris A12 APEX 30th Edition is a hybrid integrated amplifier with tube preamp and transistor power stage that, as the limited flagship of the APEX anniversary series, delivers 2 × 190 watts into 8 ohms. Advance Paris thereby celebrates 30 years of brand history – and instead of anniversary wallpaper, you get substance: dual-mono construction with two 280 VA toroidal transformers, the ESS Sabre ES9039 flagship converter, and a good 18 kilos of honest weight. Why the A12 APEX?

The APEX series builds on the proven Classic Line but upgrades everywhere: lower-noise power supplies, more precise voltage regulation – and in the A12, as the only one of the three APEX amplifiers, the ES9039 DAC (the A8 and A10 make do with the ES9018). The preamp works with two ECC81/12AT7 tubes, and the power stage delivers 2 × 292 watts into 4 ohms. With the High-Bias switch, you raise the bias current for even more tube richness – Class A character at the push of a button, without any soldering iron required.

What you get

In terms of connections, the A12 APEX hardly leaves anything to be desired: HDMI eARC for the TV, two balanced XLR inputs, three optical and three coaxial digital inputs each, an AES/EBU input, USB-B for PCM and DSD, plus a phono input that accepts both MM and MC cartridges. Output happens via Pre-Out (RCA and XLR), Rec-Out, two subwoofer outputs and speaker zones A/B – plus two headphone jacks (6.35 mm and 3.5 mm). In short: there's hardly a source that can't dock here.

Who is the A12 APEX right for – and who isn't it right for?

Honestly: the A12 APEX belongs with large floorstanding speakers and difficult loads, in living rooms where stereo and TV sound come together via eARC, and with vinyl fans who want their phono stage built right in. For a small bookshelf-speaker setup in the office, it's simply oversized – that would be like using a semi truck to pick up a croissant. And if you want built-in streaming, better look at the MyConnect or PlayStream series, or add a streamer. Oh, and: 18.25 kg and 45.4 cm deep – measure your rack before you order.

Does the A12 APEX have built-in streaming?

No, the A12 APEX is a pure amplifier with DAC. You add streaming flexibly – via a network streamer at one of the digital inputs or optionally via Advance Paris's A-BTC Bluetooth receiver. Vinyl, CD and TV sound are enjoyed entirely without a subscription, of course.

Does the A12 APEX have HDMI eARC for the TV?
