Advance Paris A8 APEX 30th Edition Amplifier

The Advance Paris A8 APEX 30th Edition is a compact hybrid integrated amplifier with tube preamp and transistor power stage that, as the entry point into the limited APEX anniversary series, delivers 2 × 76 watts into 8 ohms. At only 13.2 cm tall, it's the slimmest of the three APEX amplifiers – yet it still has the glowing ECC81 tubes behind the viewing window and the white VU meters. Understatement that glows.

Why the A8 APEX?

The APEX series is Advance Paris's anniversary edition for its 30-year milestone: upgraded Classic Line technology with lower-noise power supplies and more precise voltage regulation, limited to black with white VU meters. In the A8, a tube preamp with two ECC81/12AT7s works ahead of a Class AB power stage – and via the High-Bias switch you raise the bias current toward Class A. More tube richness at the push of a button, a feature that's anything but standard in this price class.

What you get

For its size, the A8 APEX is remarkably complete: the ESS Sabre 9018 DAC converts PCM up to 24-bit/192 kHz and DSD up to DSD128 via USB, HDMI eARC brings TV sound into the stereo system, plus two coaxial and one optical input, seven RCA inputs, and a phono MM input for your turntable. Pre-Out, Sub-Out and Rec-Out cover the output side, the speaker terminals can be switched as Zone A/B, and a 6.35mm headphone connection waits at the front. Bluetooth can be added optionally via an A-BTC module – none of it needs a subscription.

Who is the A8 APEX right for – and who isn't it right for?

Plain talk: the A8 APEX suits compact and standard floorstanding speakers in normal living rooms perfectly – and anyone who wants a flat, elegant device rather than a monster. If you want to fill a 40-square-meter room with low-efficiency speakers, you're better off with the A10 or A12 APEX. And MC cartridge fans need an external phono stage – the A8 does MM from the factory.

Does TV sound run through the A8 APEX?

Yes, via HDMI eARC. Connect the TV, control the volume with the TV remote, done – movies and shows simply sound more grown-up through real speakers than through any soundbar.

Is 76 watts enough?

For most rooms and speakers: yes, easily. Wattage figures are overrated, current delivery is underrated – and that's where the 240 VA toroidal transformer scores. For very large rooms or difficult loads, we'll honestly advise you whether it should be the bigger brother.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the A8 APEX and the A10 and A12 APEX?

The A8 APEX is the most compact of the three APEX amplifiers: 2 × 76 watts, ESS 9018 DAC, Phono MM, and a flat housing. The A10 and A12 offer more power, with the A12 additionally featuring the ES9039 DAC, XLR inputs and Phono MM/MC. For normal living rooms, the A8 is often the most sensible choice.

Can I connect a turntable?

Yes, the A8 APEX has a built-in phono input for MM cartridges – your turntable connects directly to the amplifier. Only for MC systems would you need an external phono stage. We're happy to work out which solution suits your turntable.

Does the A8 APEX have streaming or Bluetooth built in?

No, not from the factory. You can add Bluetooth optionally via an A-BTC module; streaming is added via a network streamer at the digital input. Vinyl, CD and TV sound via eARC are of course enjoyed without a subscription or extra device.

What does the High-Bias switch do?

The High-Bias switch raises the power stage's bias current so it partly operates in Class A. The result is an even warmer, smoother sound – ideal for focused listening evenings. In everyday use you simply switch it back and save power and heat.

Can I connect two pairs of speakers?

Yes, the A8 APEX's speaker terminals can be operated as Zone A and Zone B – say, living room and kitchen, individually or together. When running them in parallel, keep an eye on impedances; we're happy to work out which combination is uncritical for you.
