DAC & D/A Converters

A DAC, short for digital-to-analogue converter, turns the zeros and ones of your digital sources into an analogue signal the amplifier understands.

It's the often-overlooked link that decides how much of the recording actually reaches you in the end.

Why an external DAC?

Because the converter built into many source devices is often just a means to an end. A dedicated DAC gets more resolution, quietness and dynamics out of your streamer, computer or CD transport. The difference becomes audible especially with high-resolution files.

What matters

What counts are inputs that match your sources, the formats supported, and how well it's matched to the rest of the chain. DACs from MOON, Gato Audio, NuPrime, Vincent and Silent Angel are available at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil. We'll work out together which one fits your setup.

Who is an external DAC for? (Straight talk)

For anyone with digital sources who wants more quality than the built-in converter delivers. Straight talk: if you have a very good streaming amplifier with a strong DAC, you often don't need a second one. But if you use computer audio or a pure CD transport, a good DAC brings a noticeable gain.

Our verdict

An external DAC is the targeted lever when the digital source is good but the final polish is missing. Tell us which sources you want to connect, and we'll find the converter that improves exactly the part that matters to you.

Frequently asked questions

Do I even need an external DAC?

Only if your current device doesn't already handle the conversion well enough. Many streamers and streaming amplifiers have a decent DAC built in. With computer audio or pure transports, an external one is worth it almost always. We'll tell you honestly whether it brings something for you.

What does a better DAC bring sonically?

More resolution, cleaner spatiality and calmer, more dynamic playback, because noise and jitter are suppressed better. The effect is real, but tied to good recordings and a suitable chain. We'll give you an honest read on how big the step will be for you.

Which connections do I need?

That depends on your sources: USB for the computer, coaxial or optical for streamers and transports, sometimes HDMI too. Make sure you have enough of the right inputs. Tell us what you want to connect, and we'll check the connections in advance.

Does a DAC play all hi-res formats?

Most good DACs support high-resolution PCM and often DSD too, but not every device handles every format. If you have a large hi-res or DSD collection, it's worth checking closely. Tell us what you listen to, and we'll check the formats.

Goes well with

You'll find the matching source among the streamers and CD players. If you want everything in one unit, take a look at the streaming amplifiers; the drive is among the integrated amps.
