Collection: Speaker Cable

A speaker cable carries the amplified music signal from the amplifier or power amp to your speakers.

Why a good speaker cable?

The speaker cable is the last stretch before the box – nothing more should be lost here. What matters is a sufficient cross-section, clean contacts and solidly finished ends. A sensible cable doesn't sound "better" than physically possible, but it makes sure your power amp controls the speakers cleanly, instead of losing part of its strength in the resistance of a cable that's too thin.

What matters

Three things matter: the right cross-section for the length, both sides the same length, and a clean termination with a banana plug, spade or bare wire. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil we make your speaker cable to measure – in the exact length, with the connectors that match your amplifier and your speakers. We work out single-wire or bi-wire based on your speakers.

Who it's for – and straight talk

From your first stereo setup to a high-end chain with mono power amps: a good speaker cable belongs in every system. Anyone connecting new speakers, rearranging their room, or who has never questioned the cross-section of the old cable they've been dragging along will find what they need here.

Straight talk: a solid cable with the right cross-section gets you most of the way. The premium for exotic materials only pays off in very high-resolution chains and only for fine ears. We tell you honestly from what point the extra spend is worth it and from what point your budget is better spent on the speakers.

Verdict: the right cross-section, clean connectors, both sides the same length – then the cable has done its job. If you're unsure which cross-section fits your cable length, we'll work it out with you in a moment.

Frequently asked questions

What's the right cross-section?

For typical living-room lengths up to around five metres, 2.5 mm² is a safe choice, for short runs 1.5 mm² is often enough. The longer the run and the lower the impedance of the speaker, the more cross-section you need. Tell us the length and your speakers, and we'll recommend the right cross-section.

Single-wire or bi-wire?

That depends on your speakers: only speakers with two pairs of connection terminals can be bi-wired at all. The audible difference is usually small. If your speaker only has one pair of terminals, single-wire is a given anyway. We'll take a look at your terminals and recommend the sensible option.

Does length matter?

Yes, especially in combination with the cross-section. More important than short runs is that both speakers are connected with roughly equal cable length. Better a bit of spare in equal length than one short and one long side. For larger distances we simply increase the cross-section.

Do I need banana plugs or bare wire?

Banana plugs and spades make connecting easier, repeatable and contact-secure – especially with thick cable. Bare, twisted wire also works, but tends more towards loose contacts. We'll terminate the ends for you to match your terminals.

Do you make speaker cable to measure?

Yes. We make your speaker cable to the length you want with matching connectors, cleanly finished. That way you get exactly the length your room needs, without coiled-up excess behind the rack or cables that are too short.
