The AudioQuest Carbon is an optical digital cable (Toslink) that doesn't send the light stream through a single fiber, but through a bundle of 19 narrow-aperture, high-purity polymer fibers. A 3.5mm mini adapter is included.
Why the Carbon?
A thick fiber lets light travel many differently long paths; by the end, the portions arrive slightly offset and the pulse smears. The Carbon reverses the principle: 19 thin fibers with narrow aperture guide the light more tightly, keeping the travel times close together. All ends are finely polished, and the Toslink connectors sit play-free over brass ferrules.
What you get
Calm and substance. The bass gains contour instead of just volume, voices stand more solidly in the room, and the typical slight shimmer that's often taken for granted with optical connections becomes noticeably smaller. The included mini adapter also makes the cable universally usable.
Who is the Carbon suited for – and who isn't it?
Plain talk: on a TV with built-in speakers, the effort evaporates – the Pearl or the Forest will do there. But if you're connecting a high-quality converter optically because the source device offers nothing else, or because ground loops are in play, this is where you get the most out of the connection.
Our verdict
Optical upper class that actually translates its effort into something audible – provided the chain behind it can keep up. That's exactly what we clarify with you beforehand: HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, 044 680 22 00, WhatsApp 076 534 22 00 (text only, no calls) or shop@hdzuerisee.ch.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the Carbon work with 19 fibers instead of one?
Because many thin fibers guide the light more tightly than one thick one. AudioQuest specifies 19 narrow-aperture, low-scatter, high-purity polymer fibers for the Carbon, all finely polished. The bundle keeps the travel times of the light portions closer together, which lowers jitter and makes playback sound calmer.
What does narrow aperture mean for an optical fiber?
Aperture describes the angles at which light enters the fiber and continues to travel inside it. If it's narrow, the light portions take similarly long paths and arrive almost simultaneously. The pulse stays narrow instead of smearing, and that's exactly what a converter needs for clean timing references.
Is the Carbon overkill on a normal TV?
Yes, in most cases. Where the sound then runs through small flat-screen speakers or a simple soundbar, the advantage doesn't come through. The Carbon's real home is with a high-quality converter, a good CD transport, or a streamer with a seriously implemented optical output.
Why is it worth buying the Carbon from HD Zürisee?
Because at this tier, we ask you the uncomfortable question first: does your chain even show the difference? If it fits, we plan length and routing with you, and technician Mauri stays reachable afterwards. Reach us on 044 680 22 00 or shop@hdzuerisee.ch.
Goes well with
In the same league: the other optical cables, coaxial cables as an alternative, matching devices among the DACs & D/A converters and CD players, plus the rest of the AudioQuest world.
