The Yamaha C-5000 is a fully balanced High-End preamplifier that applies Yamaha's "Floating and Balanced" circuit to a preamp stage for the first time.
It's the command centre of the 5000 series – built to pass on every nuance of an analog source to the power amp without alteration. Dual-mono construction, with its own power transformer per channel and a mirror-image circuit board layout. Understatement isn't an option here.
Why the C-5000?
Because "Floating and Balanced" is more than a buzzword: the circuit is fully balanced throughout and never referenced to ground at any point – so ground-related interference simply has no point of attack on the signal. Add to that a discrete MM/MC phono stage with adjustable MC impedance, a copper-plated chassis against interference, and a headphone amplifier that actually deserves the name. The C-5000 is deliberately purely analog – if you're after a DAC and streaming, you won't find them here, but every franc goes exactly where it counts sonically.
What you'll hear
Silence as the foundation – and on top of it a stage that spreads wide and deep, with a calm, effortless quality you'd otherwise pay considerably more for. Voices stand naturally and tangibly in the room, instruments keep their colour, dynamic leaps come effortlessly. The C-5000 doesn't colour the sound, it lets it through.
Who is the C-5000 for? (and who it isn't – straight talk)
For anyone looking for an uncompromising analog preamp who takes their sources seriously – ideally paired with the M-5000 power amp and balanced XLR wiring. Straight talk: the C-5000 is purely analog. If you expect network streaming, room correction, or a built-in DAC, you're better served by a streaming integrated amplifier. And it only shows its full potential with a power amp of equal calibre – on a mid-range amp it would be overqualified.
Our verdict
The C-5000 is a preamp for people who know why they want a separate preamp: maximum signal purity, phono on equal footing, build quality like precision instrument-making. The Absolute Sound counted the 5000 series among Yamaha's serious return to High-End. We're happy to help you find out whether the C-5000 fits into your chain – call us or write to us.

Frequently asked questions
Does the C-5000 absolutely need the M-5000 power amp?
No, but they're made for each other. The C-5000 works with any good power amp that has an XLR or RCA input. Paired with the M-5000, you get a fully balanced chain from source to speaker – the most natural combination both sonically and visually.
Does the C-5000 have a DAC or streaming?
No. The C-5000 is deliberately built to be purely analog. You bring in digital sources via an external DAC connected to a high-level input. That keeps the preamp free of digital interference – and you choose the DAC you like.
Is the C-5000's phono stage any good, or do I need an external phono preamp?
It's good – genuinely so. The C-5000 has a discrete MM/MC phono stage with adjustable MC impedance and subsonic filter built right in. For the vast majority of cartridges, you no longer need an external phono preamplifier.
What does "Floating and Balanced" mean?
The entire signal path is balanced and never fixed to ground at any point. This means ground-related interference can't affect the music signal. Yamaha previously used this principle only in power amps – the C-5000 was the first preamp to have it.
