The Rega Aphelion 2 is Rega's reference MC cartridge with a fine-line diamond on a boron cantilever, designed for the Planar 10.
Why the Aphelion 2?
The boron cantilever is the decisive difference from the Apheta 3: stiffer and lighter than aluminium, it transmits stylus movement to the coil system with less self-resonance – audible as a calmer, more effortless sound, especially on complex passages. Hand-built in Rega's own workshop, each cartridge individually measured.
What you'll hear
Enormous calm in the sound, the finest nuances in attack and decay, and a soundstage that still shows reserves even on very good recordings. Not a cartridge that pushes itself forward – one that simply reveals more of the recording.
Who is the Aphelion 2 for? (and who it's not for)
For Planar 10 owners who want to give the deck the final piece toward full resolution. Plain talk: on smaller decks or simpler phono stages, its potential goes unused – there, the Apheta 3 or Ania Pro deliver considerably more for the money.
Our verdict
Rega's most uncompromising cartridge for the Planar 10 – there's hardly more resolution to be had in the RB format. If the rest of your chain is at this level, you actually get audibly more here.

Frequently asked questions
Which turntable is the Aphelion 2 designed for?
Rega recommends the Aphelion 2 exclusively for the Planar 10 with an RB3000 tonearm – there it meets a deck that actually makes its resolution audible.
What's the difference between the Aphelion 2 and the Apheta 3?
The Aphelion 2 uses a boron cantilever instead of aluminium – noticeably stiffer and lighter, which further reduces distortion at high frequencies.
Which phono stage suits the Aphelion 2?
A high-quality MC phono stage with high gain and 100 Ohm/1000 pF input impedance, such as the Rega Aura – on a simple entry-level phono stage, the Aphelion 2's potential is wasted.
How sensitive is the Aphelion 2 to alignment?
Like any high-quality MC cartridge, it reacts noticeably to tracking force, azimuth and anti-skating. We carefully align it in-house when you buy and install it, so you hear its full potential from day one.
