The Clearaudio smart double matrix is a record washing machine that wet-cleans both sides of a record in a single wash cycle.

Big performance, compactly realised: the wash unit is modelled on the double matrix professional SONIC, but comes in a noticeably slimmer form. A slider lets you adjust the contact area and pressing pressure to any record size, the cleaning fluid is dispensed at the push of a button, and you control the individual steps yourself.

Because cleaning both sides in one pass simply saves half the time – and because clearaudio has consistently left out what many people never use. No automatic cleaning programs, no LED fill-level display, no Sonic vibration modules. What remains is a quiet extraction turbine, an antistatic brush unit, and an operating concept you've mastered after two records.

A compact machine in a black, satin-finished acrylic housing that, at around 5.4 kilos and a footprint of 22 × 29 centimetres, fits on any sideboard. A sturdy clamp with label protection keeps the label dry. By the way: the supply and collection reservoirs are, for the first time in clearaudio's history, 3D-printed in-house – good for resources and spare-parts supply.

And if you only clean a handful of records every few months, the single-sided Smart Matrix Silent is the more affordable option.

A clever statement: two-sided matrix cleaning, compact, quiet and without frills. It takes around two minutes for a heavily soiled record – after which it's done, while other machines are only just starting on the second side. Does the smart double matrix really clean both sides at once?

Yes. The machine washes both sides of the record in a single pass, so you don't need to flip it. For heavily soiled vinyl, clearaudio reckons on around two minutes per record. That saves noticeable time once you're working through larger stacks.

What record sizes does it suit?

All common formats, from the 7-inch single through 10-inch to the 12-inch LP. The contact area can be adjusted on the wash unit, as can the brush pressing pressure via a slider. That way, every record gets exactly the treatment it needs.

How loud is it?

The extraction turbine sits inside the housing and is explicitly designed to run quietly; clearaudio doesn't publish a decibel figure. So it's not a whisper-quiet machine, but far from a workshop vacuum cleaner either – it runs without any problem in a living room.

The smart double matrix takes over the basic idea but deliberately does without automatic cleaning programs, the LED fill-level display and the Sonic vibration modules. Does it come with a clamp to protect the label?

Yes, a sturdy clamp with label protection is included in the scope of delivery. It keeps the label dry during the wash and centres the record cleanly on the platter. Cleaning fluid isn't included – you choose the one that suits your collection.
