The AudioQuest PowerQuest 3 is a mains filter with eight Schuko outlets that supplies a complete audio and video system with filtered power, and additionally protects antenna, network, and telephone lines against surges.

It's the largest unit in the compact PowerQuest family, and the only one that keeps an eye on more than just the power path. After all, a voltage spike doesn't care which cable it enters the house through.

Why the PowerQuest 3?

The PQ 3 sorts its eight outlets strictly by load type: two high-current outlets at 10 amps each for power amp, AV receiver, or subwoofer, two outlets optimized for 4K and 8K for TV and projector, four ultra-linearly filtered outlets at 3 amps each for source components. Filtering runs both push-pull and common-mode at over 22 dB each — the common-mode stage is exactly what the smaller PowerQuest 2 doesn't have, and it's what helps against RF interference.

What you get

Besides the outlets, you get feed-throughs for coax, RJ45, and RJ11 lines — that's antenna, network, and phone. Four USB charging ports with a combined 4.8 amps sit on top and on the side. The removable stand allows horizontal or vertical mounting, and an AudioQuest power cable, 2.1 meters long, is included. In standby, the unit draws less than half a watt.

Who is the PowerQuest 3 for — and who isn't it for?

Straight talk: a lean stereo setup with four devices doesn't need this much capability — the PowerQuest 2 is enough there. And if you're running high-end stereo with several large power amps, you're better off with the PowerQuest 505 or a Niagara. The PQ 3 plays to its strengths in a mixed living room: TV, receiver, subwoofer, streaming box, console, router — all on one unit.

Our verdict

The PowerQuest 3 is the most pragmatic mains filter in the AudioQuest lineup: plenty of outlets, a clean division of labor, and the only one that also shields the data lines. Anyone who has ever replaced a dead router and half a TV after a thunderstorm knows what that's worth. We'll go through how to fill the eight outlets sensibly with you: HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, 044 680 22 00, WhatsApp 076 534 22 00 (text only, no calls), shop@hdzuerisee.ch.

Frequently asked questions

What's the point of protecting the coax, network, and phone lines?

Because surges don't only come in through the wall outlet. Antenna and network lines running into the house from outside are a second path. The PowerQuest 3 routes them through and clamps them too — so the router or the cable connection is protected, not just the amplifier.

How does the PowerQuest 3 differ from the PowerQuest 2?

It has eight outlets instead of six, two video outlets instead of one, twice as many USB ports, additional common-mode filtering, and the line protection. In exchange, it's a bit deeper. For pure stereo systems, the PQ 2 is enough; for mixed AV setups, the extra cost is usually worth it.

Which devices belong on which outlet?

Amplifiers, AV receivers, and active subwoofers go on the two high-current outlets, TV or projector on the video outlets, everything else on the four filtered ones. The latter are rated for 3 amps per outlet — so don't connect anything power-hungry there, or you'll give up dynamics.

Why buy the PowerQuest 3 at HD Zürisee?

Because how you fill the outlets decides what the filter actually delivers, and we'll look at that setup together with you. Add to that over two decades of experience in living rooms around Lake Zurich, our own technician for installation and service, and warranty handling you don't have to worry about.

Still missing: the connection to the wall — Power cables. For clean data paths, it's worth a look at Network cables, and you'll find larger filters in Mains Filters & Power Conditioning.
