The Atoll CD100 Evolution is a CD player with a genuine TEAC transport and Burr-Brown converter, expandable via an option card into a D/A converter for external digital sources.

It's the entry point into Atoll's full-format players – and proof that a CD player under 1,500 francs doesn't have to be a plastic drawer.

Why the CD100 Evolution?

Because a genuine, latest-generation TEAC transport works here, not a repurposed computer drive. From there a Burr-Brown PCM1796 at 24-bit / 192 kHz takes over, together with a discrete Class-A output stage. The whole thing is powered by three separate transformers for audio, digital section and logic, with 21,450 µF filter capacitance – unusually generous for this price class.

What you hear

Composure instead of effect. Voices gain body, piano attacks have substance, and the treble stays clean rather than sharp. Distortion is under 0.0005 per cent, the signal-to-noise ratio 123 dB – figures that translate into calm in everyday listening. Output is analogue via RCA, digital via coaxial and Toslink, in case you prefer an external converter.

Who is the CD100 Evolution for?

For anyone with a CD collection who wants to move from a universal player or computer drive to a proper source – and for anyone who might want to retrofit digital inputs later. Plain talk: digital inputs only come with the DC200 card, it has no XLR output, its level is fixed, and you connect headphones elsewhere. If you want the ultimate in refinement, you'll find it one step up with the CD200 Evolution.

Our verdict

The most sensible route to good CD playback in the Atoll range. Geoffrey wrote on 28 November 2024 on Alpha Audio: «the Atoll CD100 Evolution is a very solid product, made with love.» If you've listened to your silver discs via a Blu-ray player or a laptop so far, this is where you'll first notice what's actually on them. Frequently asked questions

Can I use the Atoll CD100 Evolution as a D/A converter?
Not out of the box – it has no digital inputs. With the DC200 option card, a coaxial, an optical and an asynchronous USB-B input are added. The CD100 Evolution then also converts TV, streamer or computer signals via its Burr-Brown PCM1796.

Does the CD100 Evolution have a headphone output?
No. The CD100 Evolution is a pure source with no headphone amplifier. Its analogue output level is fixed at 2.1 volts and not adjustable – it belongs behind an integrated amplifier or preamp, not directly into a power amp.

What's the difference between the CD100 Evolution and its predecessor, the CD100 Signature?
Mainly the power supply: the Evolution has three separate transformers, ten regulated voltages and 21,450 instead of around 13,000 µF filter capacitance. Plus a kilogram more weight. The transport and controls stayed essentially the same.

Does the CD100 Evolution come with a remote control?
Yes, the Atoll system remote control is included. It controls not only the player but other Atoll devices too – so in an all-Atoll chain, you only need one remote on the table.

Why buy the Atoll CD100 Evolution from HD Zürisee?
Because we'll tell you honestly whether the step up from your current player is worth it and whether the DC200 card makes sense for you. Our own technician handles the installation, as well as delivery, setup and service.

Goes well with

It belongs behind an integrated amplifier – the Atoll IN100 Signature is the natural partner. Add bookshelf speakers or floorstanding speakers and decent cables.
