The Argon Audio Forus 4 is a passive 2-way bookshelf speaker with a 4-inch paper cone, bass reflex cabinet and gold-plated binding posts, running off an amplifier of your choice.
In black, it does exactly what it's acoustically best at anyway: staying in the background. On a shelf, behind a desk or next to the TV, it barely stands out – until the music starts.
Why the Forus 4?
For its size, the 4-inch paper cone delivers a surprisingly clean midrange, while the 0.75-inch silk soft-dome tweeter with neodymium magnet resolves the highs finely, crossing over at 2900 Hz. Add a bass reflex cabinet with a rear port that gives the small driver some breathing room down low. Scandinavian MDF, magnetic front grille, done – understatement as a design principle.
What you get
Passive means: you decide the character. A small integrated amplifier, a stereo receiver or an AV receiver – the Forus 4 takes what you give it and gives it back honestly. Wall mounting is already built in, a speaker stand works just as well, and if you ever miss some low-end foundation, a subwoofer joins in. The system grows with your plans instead of locking you in.
Who is the Forus 4 for – and who isn't it for?
Plain talk: if you want everything in one box – streaming, amplifier and remote – you're better off with the active Argon models; the Forus 4 needs electronics in front of it. And if you want to fill a large living space down into the deep bass, the Forus 5 or a floorstander makes more sense. For small to medium rooms, desktop stereo, a second system, or an honest entry into proper stereo, though, it's hard to beat. Be honest: most rooms are smaller than the ego admits.
Our verdict
Good stereo sound doesn't have to be big or complicated, and the Forus 4 makes that clear with black, matter-of-fact confidence. Which amplifier suits it, how much wall clearance your shelf allows, whether it should be the bigger sibling after all: we're happy to look at that together. Frequently asked questions
Do I need an amplifier for the Argon Forus 4?
Yes. The Forus 4 is a passive speaker and needs an amplifier or receiver to drive it. That's exactly its advantage: you choose the power and sound character yourself, and you can expand the system step by step later instead of replacing everything at once.
Can I mount the Forus 4 on the wall?
Yes, there's an integrated wall bracket on the back. Since the bass reflex port also faces backward, you should allow some clearance from the wall, otherwise the bass gets boomy. If you really want it flush against the wall, the Forus 4 Wall is the cleaner solution.
Does the Forus 4 fit on a desk?
Yes, at 14.8 cm wide and 23.9 cm tall, it stays manageable even on narrow desks. Angle it slightly toward ear height, keep some distance from the rear wall, and you get a surprisingly mature near-field stereo sound instead of thin computer speakers. A small integrated amplifier is entirely sufficient for this.
What is the difference between the Forus 4 and the Forus 5?
The Forus 5 uses a larger 5.25-inch woofer and therefore reaches deeper and louder into bigger rooms. The Forus 4 is more compact, easier to place, and feels noticeably more at home in small rooms, on a desk, or as a surround addition. Both share the same calm underlying character.
Why buy the Forus 4 from HD Zürisee?
Because with a passive speaker, the amplifier also plays a part in the sound, and from years of experience we know which combinations genuinely bring joy in everyday use. We match speakers, electronics and room to each other, give honest advice, and stay reachable through our own technician even after purchase.
