technics-sl-1200mk7-silber
Technics SL-1200MK7, Silver

The Technics SL-1200MK7 is a direct-drive turntable with an ironless coreless motor that fundamentally renews the legendary SL-1200 line in its seventh generation.

It carries the name that practically invented the DJ turntable – and in the MK7 generation brings features that simply didn't exist in the series before.

Why the SL-1200MK7?

Because it packs Technics' core technology into an accessible, versatile deck. The ironless coreless motor runs without cogging, the digital torque and brake control can be adjusted in four steps, and with 78 rpm as well as reverse play, the MK7 generation offers two features that never existed in the SL-1200 range before. Add to that an illuminated tonearm lift for cueing up in the dark and detachable, gold-plated connection cables for later upgrades.

What you hear and get

Calm and control. The direct drive keeps the speed stable, the bass stays firm, and the pitch fader (±8% / ±16%) reacts precisely rather than erratically. With a good cartridge you get a clean, dynamic sound picture at home – and if you want to DJ, the same turntable delivers the torque and responsiveness needed for that. Two uses, one device.

Who is the SL-1200MK7 suited for? (and who it isn't – plain talk)

Plain talk: the MK7 is for anyone who wants the Technics name and DJ features without switching straight to the Grand Class price bracket. What you should know: a cartridge and phono preamp aren't included. If you're after maximum speed stability and the finest tonearm mechanics, you'll find that more with the SL-1200GR2; if you only listen at home occasionally and never think about pitch or reverse, you might be paying there for features you don't need.

Our verdict

The SL-1200MK7 is the most honest entry into the Technics direct-drive world: robust, versatile and equipped with genuine DJ features that are fun at home too. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil we mount a matching cartridge and phono stage for you, so it shows its potential from the very start.

Technical data

Type: direct-drive turntable (DJ / all-round)

Drive: ironless coreless direct drive with digital torque/brake control (4 levels)

Speeds: 33 1/3, 45, 78 rpm (first time in the SL-1200 series) + reverse play

Pitch range: ±8% / ±16%, digitally controlled

Wow and flutter: 0.025% W.R.M.S.

Tonearm: statically balanced universal S-tonearm (aluminium), effective length 230 mm, detachable headshell

Platter: die-cast aluminium, Ø 332 mm, approx. 1.8 kg

Cartridge: not included (selectable separately)

Connection: phono output (RCA, detachable, gold-plated) + ground cable

Dimensions (W × H × D): approx. 453 × 169 × 353 mm

Weight: approx. 9.6 kg

Colour: silver

Included: turntable, slipmat, slipsheet, dust cover, 45 rpm adapter, counterweight, headshell, cartridge screws, phono cable, ground cable, power cable, manual

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the SL-1200MK7 and SL-1210MK7?
Technically both are identical – same coreless direct drive, same tonearm, same features. The naming comes from different markets: SL-1200 is the internationally common name, SL-1210 the DJ designation established in Europe. For us they mainly differ in colour – silver for the 1200, black for the 1210.

Does the SL-1200MK7 come with a cartridge?
No. The SL-1200MK7 comes with a headshell, but without a mounted cartridge – so you choose the system that suits your sonic taste and budget. We're happy to mount and align it for you to match.

Is the SL-1200MK7 suited for DJing?
Yes, it's built for it: high starting torque, adjustable brake, pitch fader up to ±16% and reverse play. It's just as good for everyday use at home – you get DJ robustness and hi-fi ambition in one device.

Do I need a phono preamp?
Yes, the SL-1200MK7 only outputs the pure cartridge signal. An amplifier with a phono input or a separate phono stage is needed. We're happy to show you a suitable, budget-friendly solution.

Why buy the SL-1200MK7 at HD Zürisee?
Because we take the choice of the right cartridge and correct alignment off your hands – that's what determines the sound with any direct drive.
