technics-sl-1200gr2-ortofon-mc-x30-set
Technics SL-1200GR2 + Ortofon MC X30, Set

The Technics SL-1200GR2 + Ortofon MC X30 set is a ready-to-play Grand Class direct-drive turntable, with the Ortofon MC X30 factory-mounted and aligned by us.

In short: unpack, set up, connect to an MC-capable phono stage – and play a record. No mounting, no aligning, no guessing.

Why this set?

Because the SL-1200GR2 is one of the most sensible direct drives in its class – and the Ortofon MC X30 shows what the ironless coreless motor with ΔΣ-Drive control can really do. No cogging, a remarkably calm speed stability, plus the statically balanced S-tonearm that guides the X30 with precision. Instead of buying the deck and cartridge separately and aligning them yourself, you get a ready-tuned unit – set up personally by Mauri before it reaches you.

What you hear

More resolution, the same calm. The direct drive keeps the speed stable, the bass stays firm – the foundation Technics stands for. The MC X30 adds on top: its Nude Fine Line diamond reads high frequencies more finely than an elliptical stylus and pulls details out of the groove that a moving-magnet system tends to leave behind. Because tracking force and alignment are already right with us, you hear this from the very first groove.

Who is this set suited for? (and who it isn't – plain talk)

Plain talk: this set is for anyone who wants to switch from moving magnet to moving coil without aligning it themselves – ready to play, with the proven Technics direct drive underneath. What you should know: the MC X30 is a low-output MC system that needs an MC-capable phono stage or a step-up transformer; a plain MM input isn't enough. If MM is enough for you, take a look at one of our 2M sets; if you want the finer resolution, this set is the right choice.

Our verdict

A well-rounded, ready-to-play set a class up: a solid Grand Class deck, a finely resolving MC X30, all mounted and aligned. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil our technician Mauri sets the set up cleanly, recommends the right MC phono stage and delivers it fully ready to go on request.

Technical data

Type: direct-drive turntable (Grand Class), ready-to-play set with factory-mounted & aligned MC cartridge

Drive: ironless coreless direct drive with ΔΣ-Drive control

Speeds: 33 1/3, 45, 78 rpm

Tonearm: statically balanced S-tonearm (aluminium), effective length 230 mm, detachable headshell

Platter: die-cast aluminium with rubber damping, approx. 2.5 kg

Cartridge: Ortofon MC X30 (moving coil, low output), Nude Fine Line stylus – mounted & aligned by us

Output voltage MC X30 (1 kHz, 5 cm/s): 0.4 mV

Phono stage required: MC-capable phono preamp or step-up transformer ahead of an MM input (a plain MM input isn't enough)

Connection: phono output (RCA, detachable) + ground cable

Deck dimensions (W × H × D): approx. 453 × 173 × 372 mm

Deck weight: approx. 11.2 kg

Included: Technics SL-1200GR2, mounted Ortofon MC X30, headshell, counterweight, platter, RCA cable, ground cable, dust cover, manual

Frequently asked questions

What's included in the SL-1200GR2 + Ortofon MC X30 set?
The Technics SL-1200GR2 direct-drive turntable and the Ortofon MC X30, both factory-mounted and aligned by us. All that's missing is an MC-capable phono stage – deck and cartridge are already fully matched to each other.

Do I need a special phono stage for the MC X30?
Yes, an MC-capable one. With 0.4 mV output voltage, the MC X30 is a low-output moving-coil system – a plain MM input isn't enough. An MC phono stage or a step-up transformer is required; we'll check your amplifier and tell you what you need.

How does the MC X30 differ from the 2M sets?
The MC X30 is a moving-coil system with a Nude Fine Line diamond and resolves more finely than the moving-magnet systems in the 2M range, but requires an MC-capable phono stage for it. For an easier start, our 2M sets are often the better fit.

Is the turntable already set up?
Yes. Tracking force, anti-skating and the MC X30's alignment are already adjusted by us. You unpack, set up, connect – without touching the alignment yourself.

Why buy the SL-1200GR2 + Ortofon MC X30 set at HD Zürisee?
Because ready-to-play at HD Zürisee really means ready-to-play: Mauri mounts and aligns the MC X30 cleanly, we recommend the right MC phono stage and deliver fully ready to go on request.
