tannoyturnberrygr
Tannoy Turnberry GR Floorstanding Speaker, Walnut (Pair)

The Tannoy Turnberry GR is a 2-way floorstanding speaker from the Prestige Gold Reference series with a 10-inch Dual Concentric driver in a 100-litre cabinet of oiled walnut.

It's the speaker many people picture when they hear "Tannoy": broad, warm, waxed, with a Tulip Waveguide and the inevitable tin of wood wax in the box. And despite its nostalgic looks, it's tuned surprisingly true to today's standards.

Why the Turnberry GR?

Because it offers more volume, more headroom and more warmth in the lower midrange than the Stirling, without stepping into Kensington price territory. FIDELITY called the Turnberry GR, in its review (Jochen Reinecke, issue 2/2014), an unreserved recommendation from a sonic point of view — a sentence you rarely read stated this plainly.

What you hear

Substance and calm. The 25-centimetre coaxial driver puts tweeter and woofer on one axis, with the crossover sitting around 1.3 kHz — so the vocal range comes from a single, coherent source. The paper cone with twin-roll surround delivers bass with real volume rather than just level, and the Tulip Waveguide spreads the treble evenly through the room.

Who is the Turnberry GR for?

For medium to large rooms, for loud and quiet listeners alike — and for classically furnished living rooms. Let's be blunt: two 100-litre walnut cabinets are a statement about your living situation. If you want a minimalist look, you won't be happy here, no matter how good it sounds. And in a small room close to the wall it booms — go for the Stirling instead.

Our verdict

The Turnberry GR is the Prestige sweet spot: big enough for real depth, forgiving enough for moderate amplifiers, expensive enough to be taken seriously — but not so expensive that you need to make excuses. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we'll tell you honestly whether your room can carry it.

Technical data

Type: 2-way floorstanding speaker, Distributed Port System

Driver: 10-inch (250 mm) Dual Concentric, paper pulp cone with double roll surround

Tweeter: 33 mm aluminium-magnesium dome in Tulip Waveguide

Frequency response: 34 Hz – 25 kHz (–6 dB)

Sensitivity: 93 dB (2.83 V / 1 m)

Impedance: 8 Ohm

Power handling: 400 W peak

Recommended amplifier power: 30 – 180 W

Crossover frequency: around 1.3 kHz, ICW ClarityCap in the tweeter circuit

Adjustments: treble trim via front-panel knurled screw (0 / ±1.5 / ±3 dB)

Connections: gold-plated bi-wiring WBT terminals, fifth terminal for grounding

Cabinet volume: 100 litres, high-density chipboard, DMT bracing

Finish: oiled walnut veneer with inlays, gold-anodised trim

Dimensions (W × H × D): 456 × 950 × 336 mm

Weight: 30 kg per speaker

Included: bi-wire jumpers, furniture feet and spikes, Prestige wood wax

FAQ

Which amplifier suits the Tannoy Turnberry GR?

93 dB at a forgiving 8 Ohm is uncomplicated: 30 to 120 clean watts cover most rooms. Tubes work brilliantly, powerful transistor amps just as well. What matters is tonal colour and bass control. Tell us what you have in mind — we'll help you figure it out.

Turnberry GR or Stirling GR?

The Turnberry is bigger, warmer and handles higher levels — the right choice for larger rooms and loud music. The Stirling is more compact and finer in its detail. Both share the 10-inch coaxial driver. Which one fits depends on your room and taste in music, not the price.

How much space does the Turnberry GR need?

It's 45.6 cm wide and wants 30 to 50 cm of distance from the wall so the soundstage can gain depth. Realistically from around 22 m² of room size. In smaller rooms the lower midrange turns thick — we'd rather tell you that upfront than afterwards.

What's the knurled screw on the front for?

It lets you fine-tune the treble level in small steps and adapt the speaker to your room. In heavily damped rooms you add energy, in reverberant ones you take it away. Not a toy — a genuinely effective tool.

Why buy the Tannoy Turnberry GR at HD Zürisee?

Because a speaker with this much character needs the right electronics to truly shine — and after almost three decades in the shop, we know which combinations work.
