tannoycheviot
Tannoy Cheviot Legacy Floorstanding Speaker, Walnut (Pair)

The Tannoy Cheviot Legacy is a 2-way floorstanding speaker with a 12-inch Dual Concentric driver, translating the HPD monitors of the 1970s into a modern, handmade walnut cabinet.

It's the middle model in the Legacy series – and pretty much the most sensible one. 86 cm tall, but almost 45 cm wide: that doesn't match today's slimness ideal at all, and that's exactly the point. What's working here is a 30 cm coax, not three small woofers pretending to be one.

Why the Cheviot Legacy?

Because it makes the 12-inch Dual Concentric affordable – the driver that puts tweeter and woofer on one axis and thereby forms a point source. hifitest.de, testing the Legacy series, called the Cheviot the best compromise between performance and home-friendliness among the three models. We'd put it exactly the same way.

What you hear

Substance. A soundstage that moves out into the room instead of sticking between the speakers, midrange with body, and treble coupled with correct timing to the centre of the woofer via the Tulip horn. The crossover point sits unusually low at 1.2 kHz – the entire vocal range comes from a single, unified source.

Who is the Cheviot Legacy suited for?

For medium to large rooms, for vinyl, jazz, classical, old rock – and for anyone who cares more about the gut of the music than the last percentage point of resolution. Bottom line: if you're after a slim look and digital bells and whistles, this isn't it. And if you put the Cheviot against the wall in a 12 m² room, you'll mainly get boominess. The Eaton is the better choice there.

Our verdict

The Cheviot is the point where the Legacy series clicks: big enough for real depth, small enough for a normal living room. Honestly – when did you last actually enjoy your system instead of just operating it? At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we tell you honestly whether your room can carry the Cheviot, or whether one size down would bring more enjoyment.

Technical data

Type: 2-way floorstanding speaker, dual distributed port (front-firing)

Driver: 12-inch (300 mm) Dual Concentric, paper pulp diaphragm with dual-roll surround

Tweeter: 33 mm aluminium-magnesium dome in a Tulip waveguide

Frequency response: 38 Hz – 30 kHz (±6 dB)

Sensitivity: 91 dB (1 W / 1 m)

Impedance: 8 ohms

Power handling: 125 W continuous / 500 W peak

Recommended amplifier power: 20 – 250 W

Crossover frequency: 1.2 kHz, hand-wired passive crossover

Controls: 2-band energy control on the front (treble energy, roll-off)

Terminals: 5 × 4 mm 24-carat WBT terminals, fifth pole for grounding

Cabinet volume: 58 litres, high density, DMT bracing, walnut veneer

Dimensions (W × H × D): 448 × 860 × 260 mm

Weight: 29 kg per speaker

Scope of delivery: bi-wire jumpers, floor spikes, Tannoy wood wax

Frequently asked questions

How large does the room need to be for the Tannoy Cheviot Legacy?

It feels at home from around 20 m², with 25 to 40 m² being ideal. It needs some listening distance, because it images on a large scale. In smaller rooms, the Eaton is the more coherent solution. We'll give you an honest assessment of your own situation.

Which amplifier suits the Cheviot Legacy?

91 dB sensitivity and 8 ohms make it forgiving: 20 to 60 clean watts are enough in practice. Powerful transistor amps work just as well as good valve amps. What matters is tonal quality, not the wattage figure. Tell us your setup and we'll assess it.

Cheviot or Arden – which is the right choice?

The Arden is the bigger statement, the Cheviot the better living-room compromise. If your listening distance is under 3.5 metres, the Cheviot almost always wins. In genuinely large rooms, the Arden shows off its authority. We'll help you weigh it up.

Can the Cheviot stand close to the wall?

The reflex ports sit at the front, which makes it noticeably more forgiving near a wall than classic floorstanders. Even so, with no distance at all, the fundamental tone still gets thick. 20 to 40 cm is a good starting point, and we'll fine-tune the rest with the tone control on the front.

Why buy the Tannoy Cheviot Legacy at HD Zürisee?

Because from years of practice, we know which amplifiers harmonise with a Dual Concentric driver and which ones bore it.
