tannoy-prestige-grf-standlautsprecher
Tannoy Prestige GRF Floorstanding Speakers, Walnut (Pair)

The Tannoy Prestige GRF is a 2-way floorstanding speaker from the Gold Reference series, featuring a 12-inch Alnico-driven Dual Concentric driver in a hand-crafted cabinet of oiled walnut.

It's the production version of the GRF-90, the limited anniversary edition that sold out faster than Tannoy could rebuild it. Same parts, same driver – just permanently in the range this time. 99 kilos per speaker, 1.24 metres tall: this isn't a speaker, it's a piece of furniture with a side job.

Why the Prestige GRF?

Because this 12-incher is perhaps the happiest compromise in the Prestige range: big enough for real authority in the bass, small enough to stay tight and accurate through the midrange. Over 95 dB efficiency and 560 watts peak power handling mean, in everyday terms: you don't need a powerhouse amplifier, you need a good one.

What you hear

Fast, precise bass and a fluid, open midrange – exactly what the PepperPot waveguide with Alnico motor is meant to deliver. The minimalist, cryogenically treated crossover with ICW ClarityCap MR capacitors keeps the signal path short. You don't hear this as an effect, but as a given.

Who is the Prestige GRF for?

For large rooms, classic interiors, and people looking for something between the Kensington and Canterbury that can do both. Plainly put: 99 kilos and 55 cm of width per speaker is a statement – to your floor, your doors and your household harmony. Anyone who wants the same fundamental character in a more compact form should look at the Kensington GR. And anyone looking for a weekend gadget is fundamentally in the wrong place here.

Our verdict

The GRF is the Prestige insider tip: seen less often than the Turnberry or Kensington, but technically in the top league – and equipped with the 12-inch coax that many consider the most balanced in the series. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we plan the room, delivery and electronics with you before you decide.

Technical Data

Type: 2-way floorstanding speaker, bass reflex

Driver: 12-inch (300 mm) Gold Reference Dual Concentric with Alnico motor system

Treble: 2-inch compression driver, aluminium-magnesium diaphragm with Mylar surround, PepperPot waveguide

Frequency response: 24 Hz – 27 kHz

Sensitivity: 95 dB/watt

Impedance: 8 ohms

Power handling: 560 W peak

Crossover frequency: 1.1 kHz, bi-wired passive crossover, cryogenically treated, ICW ClarityCap MR

Controls: ±3 dB shelving over 1.1 – 27 kHz, slope +2 to −6 dB/octave from 5 kHz

Connections: WBT NextGen bi-wiring terminals, fifth pole for grounding

Cabinet: high-density birch plywood, DMT bracing, hand-crafted

Finish: oiled walnut veneer

Dimensions (W × H × D): 550 × 1240 × 465 mm

Weight: 99 kg per speaker

Included: bi-wire bridges, Prestige wood wax

Frequently Asked Questions

Which amplifier suits the Tannoy Prestige GRF?

With over 95 dB efficiency into a forgiving 8 ohms, it's undemanding: 20 to 100 clean watts are enough for most rooms, and high-quality tube amps suit it superbly. What matters is tonal quality and freedom from noise, not the wattage. We'll assess your setup honestly.

Prestige GRF or Kensington GR?

The GRF has the larger 12-inch coax, more volume and more depth, but needs considerably more space and floor. The Kensington is slimmer and more living-room-friendly. If your room allows for it, the GRF is the more commanding speaker – otherwise not.

How big does the room need to be for the Prestige GRF?

Realistically from about 35 m² upward, with enough listening distance and space behind the speakers. It can play quietly too, but it wants to breathe. In rooms that are too small, the bass crushes the soundstage – we'd rather tell you that beforehand.

How is the Prestige GRF delivered?

At 99 kilos per speaker, we organize delivery and on-site setup and clarify access, stairs and floor load capacity beforehand. Our technician Mauri then sets the speakers up in the room afterward.

Why buy the Tannoy Prestige GRF from HD Zürisee?

Because with a speaker of this scale, planning matters more than the purchase itself: room, structural load, delivery, electronics. We accompany the whole process from start to finish, deliver, install, and stay reachable with our own technician.
