scansonichdmb2-5bwn
Scansonic HD MB2.5 B Floorstanding Speaker, Walnut (Pair)

The Scansonic HD MB2.5 B is a slim 2.5-way floorstanding speaker with a ribbon tweeter and two carbon drivers, here in genuine walnut veneer.

The warm wood grain turns the slim column into a piece of furniture you're happy to look at even when no music is playing. Which is rare enough for a speaker.

Why the MB2.5 B?

Scansonic HD belongs to the Danish Dantax group, which also includes Raidho – hence the fine ribbon tweeter with its featherlight, clamped foil diaphragm for silky highs. Two 5.25-inch carbon drivers form the 2.5-way system; the second specifically supports the bass.

The walnut veneer is real wood – that explains the premium over the lacquered versions. Technically and sonically it's the same MB2.5 B, just in natural wood instead of silk matte.

What you hear

A wide, precise soundstage with fine highs and tight bass down to 36 Hz. The MB2.5 B resolves details cleanly and stays coherent even with complex music. The slim front is deceptive – sonically it appears mature and confident.

Adjustable aluminium feet decouple it cleanly from the floor and provide secure footing on any surface.

Who is the MB2.5 B suited for?

For listeners who want to combine audiophile sound with a warm natural material in small to medium-sized rooms. Ideal with a good integrated amplifier or streaming amplifier. Plain talk: very large rooms and uncompromising levels are more the domain of the larger MB models. For normal living rooms the MB2.5 B is perfectly sized.

Our verdict

The walnut version is the warmest, most homely MB2.5 B – sonically identical to the lacquered ones, visually in a class of its own. stereo, The Ear and AudioKey Reviews have consistently praised the model. We at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil find the right amplifier for it together with you.

Technical data

Type: 2.5-way floorstanding speaker, bass reflex (front port)

Finish: walnut (genuine wood veneer)

Drivers: 1× ribbon tweeter, 1× 5.25″ carbon mid-woofer, 1× 5.25″ carbon woofer

Frequency response: 36 Hz – 40 kHz

Impedance: > 6 ohms

Sensitivity: 88 dB

Crossover: 500 Hz + 2600 Hz

Recommended amplifier power: > 50 W

Cabinet: curved, heavily braced, vented, with carbon bracing and adjustable aluminium feet

Dimensions (W×H×D): 178 × 998 × 286 mm

Weight: 15.6 kg per unit

Front cover: not included – matching magnetic front grille (fabric, black) available separately as an accessory

Scope of delivery: one pair of speakers (2 units)

Frequently asked questions

Why does the walnut version cost more?

Because it's genuine wood veneer rather than a lacquered finish.
