regaplanar8wh
Rega Planar 8 Turntable, White

The Rega Planar 8 is a high-end manual belt-drive turntable with a skeletal Tancast-8 plinth, the precise RB880 tonearm and an external Neo MK2 power supply.

Here in matte white – the lighter-coloured version of the turntable that brings Rega's reference Naiad into an attainable league. Radically light, uncompromisingly rigid, built for sound rather than the spec sheet.

Why the Planar 8?

Rega has stripped away everything that doesn't contribute to the sound. What remains is the "stressed beam" between the tonearm base and main bearing, stiffened with a double phenolic-resin brace. The skeletal plinth made from a Tancast-8 foam core and HPL is 30% lighter than the old RP8, yet stiffer. Add to that the three-layer "Super-Flywheel" glass platter, two EBLT belts, and the hand-matched 24V motor on the Neo MK2 power supply.

What you'll hear

Calm – and suddenly details that used to disappear. The Planar 8 layers deep, renders tone colours cleanly and keeps Rega's typical drive. Compared to the Planar 6 it gains noticeably in resolution and clarity. In white, it's also a real eye-catcher that doesn't want to disappear in the living room.

Who is the Planar 8 for? (and who it isn't – straight talk)

For serious vinyl listeners who want to get close to the reference without blowing the budget – and who value a unit that also makes a visual statement. The RB880 is tuned for moving-coil cartridges (Ania, Apheta). Honestly: without a cartridge and an MC-capable phono stage, the Planar 8 won't play a single note – both need to be factored in. If you want plug-and-play, look a class down.

Our verdict

A turntable that achieves through lightweight engineering what others need a lot of mass and a lot of money for – and in white, one of the few high-end devices you deliberately put on display. Once you've heard the calm the skeletal plinth brings, you understand the Rega approach immediately.

Technical specifications

Drive: belt drive with 24V synchronous motor (hand-matched), two EBLT belts

Tonearm: hand-built Rega RB880 (zero-tolerance bearings, slim stainless steel counterweight)

Power supply: Neo MK2 (external), electronic speed switching 33⅓ / 45 rpm + fine adjustment

Platter: three-layer laminated float glass platter (Super-Flywheel effect)

Plinth: skeletal Tancast-8 foam core with HPL, double phenolic-resin brace, matte white

Cartridge: none included (choose freely, MC recommended, e.g. Rega Ania/Apheta)

Connection: RCA, Rega phono cable with locking connectors

Finish: white (matte)

Dimensions (W × H × D, lid closed): 420 × 125 × 315 mm

Weight: approx. 4.2 kg

Warranty: 2 years

What's included: turntable with RB880 tonearm, Neo MK2 power supply, three-layer glass platter, two EBLT belts, removable dust cover (without cartridge)

Frequently asked questions

Does the Rega Planar 8 in White come with a cartridge?

No, it's supplied without a cartridge. Rega has tuned it for moving-coil – Ania or Apheta are recommended. On request, we'll fit and align your chosen system fully ready to play.

Does white sound different from black?

No. Black and white are technically identical, the difference is purely visual. The white plinth looks lighter and more present in bright rooms – sonically, neither gives anything away to the other.

Which phono preamp do I need?

An MC-capable phono stage matching the recommended cartridge, such as the Rega Aria or Fono MC. The Planar 8 has no built-in phono stage. We'll help you find the right combination.

How does the Planar 8 differ from the Planar 6?

Skeletal plinth, three-layer glass platter, the finer RB880 and two drive belts – this delivers a calmer background, more resolution and a deeper soundstage. A clear step towards the reference.

Why buy the Rega Planar 8 at HD Zürisee?

Because this turntable only plays as well as it's set up.
