regaplanar3bl
Rega Planar 3 Turntable, Black

The Rega Planar 3 is a manual belt-drive turntable with a hand-built RB330 tonearm that's been the reference in its price class for years. No display, no automation, no frills – just British purism relentlessly focused on one thing: getting as much music as possible out of the groove. If you want to really hear your records for the first time instead of just playing them, the journey starts here.

Why the Planar 3?

Rega doesn't build for the spec sheet, it builds for the ear. The Planar 3 uses a light, double-braced plinth (mass where it helps – gone everywhere else), a 12 mm glass platter with a polished edge, and the RB330: a tonearm whose near-frictionless precision bearings extract more information than you'd expect at this price. The 24-volt synchronous motor runs quiet and smooth. If you want more later, add the external Neo PSU for even steadier speed stability.

What you'll hear

Pace, timing and sheer musical enjoyment – what Rega is famous for. Bass is taut and precise, vocals sit tangibly in the room, and even with densely produced recordings the Planar 3 never loses the thread. It doesn't sound "nice", it sounds alive. Honestly: that "just one more side" feeling is exactly why most people come back to vinyl in the first place.

Who is the Planar 3 for? (and who it isn't – straight talk)

Ideal for anyone looking for a serious way into audiophile vinyl listening and wanting a turntable that grows with you over the years – via cartridge, power supply, or later a move up to the bigger Planars. Straight talk: if you're expecting full automation with Bluetooth and a start-stop button, this isn't it. The Planar 3 wants to be operated – set it down, lower the arm, listen. That's exactly the point.

Our verdict

The Planar 3 is the turntable we at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil happily recommend to anyone who's serious about vinyl without wanting to spend a fortune. A classic that earns its reputation fresh every day – and a foundation you can build on for years. It's no accident that What Hi-Fi? named the Planar 3 "Product of the Year" in 2020 and has awarded it multiple times over the years.

Technical specifications

Drive: belt drive with 24V synchronous motor

Tonearm: hand-built Rega RB330

Cartridge: none included (choose separately)

Platter: 12 mm glass platter with polished edge

Drive belt: Advanced EBLT

Speeds: 33⅓ / 45 rpm (manual belt change)

Connections: RCA; mini-DIN for optional Neo PSU

Finish: gloss black

Dimensions (W × H × D, lid closed): 447 × 117 × 360 mm

Weight: 6.0 kg

What's included: turntable with pre-fitted RB330 tonearm, clear dust cover, plug-in power supply

Frequently asked questions

Does the Rega Planar 3 need a phono preamp?

Yes. The Planar 3 has no built-in phono stage. You need either an amplifier with a phono input or an external phono preamp – such as Rega's Fono MM MK5. We'll tell you what fits your existing system when you talk to us.

Which cartridge fits the Planar 3?

We recommend MM cartridges like the Rega Nd3 or Nd5, or the MC cartridge Ania for more resolution. No cartridge is fitted at the factory, so you choose freely. On request, we'll fit and align it properly for you – so the arm tracks cleanly right from the start.

What does the Neo PSU power supply do?

The external Neo PSU delivers more precise speed stability and electronic speed switching at the touch of a button instead of moving the belt by hand. Audibly, this mainly shows up as a calmer, more stable sonic background. A worthwhile upgrade you can always add later.

Is the Planar 3 suitable for beginners?

Yes, provided you're happy to operate it manually. The Planar 3 is deliberately stripped back: no automation convenience, but sound far above its class. For many, it's the first "proper" turntable – and often the one they keep for years.

Why buy the Rega Planar 3 at HD Zürisee?

Because we've lived and breathed vinyl for decades and know which combination really brings joy day to day. We advise you on cartridge, phono stage and setup, fit and align on request, and handle the warranty cleanly as an authorized dealer through the official Swiss distributor.
