nadc389
NAD C389 Integrated Amplifier with ESS DAC & MDC2

The NAD C389 is a stereo integrated amplifier with ESS Sabre DAC that combines 2× 130 watts of HybridDigital power and two MDC2 expansion slots.

The flexible all-rounder of the Classic Series – a high-quality converter, two module slots and plenty of headroom to grow.

Why the NAD C389?

Because it combines power and finesse. The HybridDigital UcD power stage delivers 2× 130 watts with PowerDrive reserves, and the ESS Sabre ES9028Q2M DAC (up to 32-bit/384 kHz) ensures clean digital playback. Two MDC2 slots make it particularly future-proof: one module streams, one slot stays free.

What you get

The C389 offers MM phono, two high-level inputs and two optical and two coaxial digital inputs each. On the output side there's pre-out, two subwoofer outputs with digital crossover and headphones. Via one of the two MDC2 slots you can add the optional BluOS-D module with BluOS streaming, Dirac Live and HDMI eARC – the second slot stays free for later.

Who is the NAD C389 suited for – and who isn't it for?

The right choice if you want high-quality DAC sound and room to grow. Straight talk: if you primarily need maximum wattage rather than converter finesse, the C379 is the more consistent power choice. And if you're filling a really large room, reach for the C399. Streaming on the C389 only arrives with the optional BluOS-D module.

Our verdict

The C389 is the balanced all-rounder of the Classic Series: powerful, with a reference-grade DAC and, thanks to two MDC2 slots, the most future-proof for longest. An amplifier that grows with you – stereo today, streaming with Dirac tomorrow.

Technical specifications

Type: stereo integrated amplifier (HybridDigital)

Amplifier technology: HybridDigital UcD with PowerDrive

Continuous power: 2× 130 watts (8/4 Ω)

Dynamic power: 210 watts (8 Ω) / 300 watts (4 Ω)

DAC: ESS Sabre ES9028Q2M (32-bit / 384 kHz)

Phono input: MM (moving magnet)

Analogue inputs: 2× high-level (RCA), 1× phono

Digital inputs: 2× optical, 2× coaxial

Outputs: pre-out, 2× subwoofer (digital crossover), headphone

Expansion: 2× MDC2 slot (e.g. MDC2 BluOS-D)

Dimensions (W × H × D): 435 × 120 × 390 mm

Weight: 11.2 kg

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the NAD C379 and C389?

The C389 has the higher-quality ESS Sabre DAC and two MDC2 slots instead of one, but slightly less continuous power (2× 130 instead of 2× 150 watts). The C379 is the pure powerhouse, the C389 the more flexible all-rounder. Which one suits you better depends on your speakers and upgrade plans.

Does the NAD C389 support Dirac Live?

Yes, as soon as the MDC2 BluOS-D module (available separately) is fitted. That turns the C389 into a BluOS streamer and enables Dirac Live room correction, which digitally tunes the sound to your listening room. Thanks to two MDC2 slots, one slot stays free.

Why buy the NAD C389 at HD Zürisee?

We know the NAD Classic Series inside out and will tell you honestly whether the C389, C379 or C399 suits your speakers.
