gatoaudiofm8sb
Gato Audio FM-8 Bookshelf Speaker, Satin Black (Pair)

The Gato Audio FM-8 is a passive 2-way bookshelf speaker that packs the full sound of a large speaker into a deliberately compact cabinet.

With just 8 liters of internal volume and 30 cm of height, it sits on a shelf, a sideboard or a TV cabinet – and delivers the intimacy, precision and coherent soundstage that small two-way speakers are famous for. Two purpose-built drivers, a FusedMASS cabinet and Gato's own PurePHASE crossover turn the smallest member of the FM series into a full-fledged high-ender. Supplied as a pair, in the current, 2021-revised version.

Why the Gato Audio FM-8?

Because nothing here is off the shelf. Gato develops the drivers itself, together with Danish transducer specialists: a 38 mm ring radiator tweeter with a powerful ferrite motor, and a 150 mm mid/woofer with a mineral-fiber cone and low-loss suspension. The FusedMASS cabinet consists of several bonded material layers with a damping layer and heavy internal bracing – that calms resonances rather than simply piling on mass. The PurePHASE crossover doesn't just separate the frequencies cleanly, it also ensures correct phase alignment, low group delay and wide dispersion. On top of that comes lossless voicing: you gently adjust the sound to your room, your amplifier and your taste – without losing any detail in the process. Developed and built in Copenhagen.

The revised FM series

You get the current series, which Gato fundamentally revised in 2021: new cabinet manufacturing with better fit and finish, improved metal parts, crossovers with high-quality components from Jantzen Audio, assembled in-house on double-sided fiberglass boards and measured with Audio Precision equipment, plus newly developed gold-plated terminals with a firmer grip. This revision also brought the matte Satin Black finish you've chosen here, and the choice between a black or silver trim ring.

What you'll hear

Surprisingly full-bodied for its size. The FM-8 plays rich and intimate at the same time, with a precise, tangible soundstage and voices that stand free in the room rather than sticking to the speaker cabinets. It resolves finely, yet stays musical rather than analytical – the classic trick of a well-tuned small two-way. The magnetically attached fabric covers are built to color the sound as little as possible; the trim ring around the drivers comes in silver (standard) or, for an extra charge, in black, to match your front baffle.

Who is the FM-8 for – and who isn't it for?

Plainly put: the FM-8 is for anyone who wants genuine high-end sound in a small to medium-sized room, without two floorstanders taking up the corner. It blossoms on an amplifier with some headroom to spare – with 85 dB efficiency and a 4-ohm load, it likes power (Gato recommends 50 to 200 watts). If you want to fill a large space or want deep home-cinema bass, you'd rather go for the FM-15, a floorstander from the series, or add a subwoofer – the FM-8 is a precision tool, not an earthquake generator.

Our verdict

The smallest Gato is anything but a compromise: a handcrafted two-way speaker with its own drivers, a clever cabinet and an adjustable crossover, delivering big performance in small rooms. The matte Satin Black stays deliberately understated – ideal if you don't want the speaker to reflect light on the shelf. Not sure whether the FM-8 fits your amplifier and your room? Tell us about your setup – we at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil will advise you on placement, amplifier matching and trim ring choice, and set the speakers up at your home if you like.

Technical data – Gato Audio FM-8

Type: passive 2-way bookshelf speaker (bass reflex)

Tweeter: 38 mm ring radiator, ferrite motor, optimized chamber

Mid/woofer: 150 mm mineral-fiber cone, low-loss suspension, shorting rings

Frequency response: 45 Hz – 35 kHz

Efficiency (2.83 V): 85 dB

Nominal impedance: 4 Ω

Recommended amplifier power: 50 – 200 W

Crossover: PurePHASE with lossless voicing, components from Jantzen Audio, double-sided fiberglass board

Cabinet: FusedMASS multi-layer laminate, 8 liters internal volume

Connections: gold-plated bi-wire terminals (banana plug / 4 mm)

Trim ring: silver (standard) or black (extra charge)

Dimensions (W×H×D): 18 × 30 × 26 cm

Weight: 9 kg each

Finish: Satin Black (matte)

Origin: designed and built in Copenhagen, Denmark

What's included: 1 pair of FM-8, magnetic fabric covers, manual

Frequently asked questions

What room size suits the FM-8?

For small to medium-sized rooms. With 8 liters of volume and 30 cm of height, the FM-8 is designed for near-field listening and typical living rooms, where it draws a surprisingly large, precise soundstage. In very large rooms, or for deep home-cinema bass, you're better off pairing it with a subwoofer or choosing a larger FM model.

What amplifier does the FM-8 need?

One with some power in reserve. The FM-8 has a 4-ohm impedance and 85 dB efficiency; Gato recommends 50 to 200 watts. A powerful integrated amplifier drives it confidently and lets it play dynamically – we're happy to help you find the right match.

Can I adjust the sound to my room?

Yes. The FM series offers lossless crossover voicing: you can gently tune the sound to your room, your amplifier and your taste, without losing any detail. That way, the FM-8 sits cleanly even in acoustically difficult rooms.

What changed with the 2021 FM update?

Gato overhauled cabinet manufacturing – better fit and finish, improved metal parts – and retuned the crossovers with components from Jantzen Audio, assembled and measured in-house. New gold-plated terminals, the matte Satin Black finish and the choice between a black or silver trim ring were added too. We supply this current version.

What finishes is the FM-8 available in?

In Black High Gloss, White High Gloss and Walnut High Gloss (real wood veneer), as well as matte Satin Black.
