denon-dcd-600ne-cd-player
Denon DCD-600NE Entry-Level CD Player, Black

The Denon DCD-600NE is a CD player with AL32 Processing that, without any frills, gets exactly one thing right: playing CDs cleanly, transparently and without nervous harshness.

It's the entry point of the NE series and the honest counter-design to "CD player as an afterthought" – no USB, no SACD, but a DirectPath converter from Burr-Brown that delivers exactly what a two-channel system needs. If you own a CD collection and are looking for an unfussy, good-sounding player for it, this is the straightforward way to get there.

Why the DCD-600NE?

Because it focuses on the essentials. The PCM5142 converter from Burr-Brown with 192 kHz/32-bit runs in DirectPath mode – the shortest possible, unaltered signal path from the transport to the output, without unnecessary detours through additional circuitry.

Add to that Denon's AL32 Processing for reconstructing the audio signal and a low-vibration housing concept that you wouldn't automatically expect in this price class. The result is a player that justifies its price not with extra features, but with what comes out of the speakers.

What you hear

112 dB signal-to-noise ratio and 101 dB dynamic range deliver a clean, slightly lean tonality – clear and crisp, without tipping over into harshness. From good recordings, the DCD-600NE pulls out surprising amounts of depth and emotion, especially compared to other devices in its price class.

And because no streaming function distracts here, your full attention goes to the disc in the tray. For anyone who still values their CD collection and doesn't feel like adding yet another subscription, that's exactly an argument in its favor, not a drawback.

Who is the DCD-600NE for? (and who isn't it for)

For beginners and anyone looking for a pure, uncomplicated CD player as a first or second source in a stereo system – for example, matched with the PMA-600NE or a comparable integrated amplifier.

Straight talk: if you own SACDs or want to play files via USB, the DCD-600NE isn't for you – it has neither the transport nor the connection for that. Then it's worth looking at the DCD-900NE or DCD-1700NE. The 600NE is deliberately a purist, not an all-rounder.

Our verdict

The DCD-600NE isn't a device that wants to impress with a wealth of features – and that's exactly what makes it likeable. If you want to pop in a CD and simply listen to good music, this is spot on, without having to dig deep into your pocket for it.

What the trade press says: "A thoroughly honest CD player without any frills!" – hifi.de, September 29, 2021, overall rating 8.2 out of 10.

Technical data

Type: CD player with AL32 Processing

D/A converter: PCM5142, Burr-Brown (192 kHz/32-bit), DirectPath

Supported formats: CD, CD-R/RW, WMA, MP3 (no SACD)

Frequency response: 2 Hz–20 kHz

Signal-to-noise ratio: 112 dB

Dynamic range: 101 dB

Total harmonic distortion: 0.003%

Digital output: 1× optical

Output level: 2-channel RCA, fixed, 2.0 Vrms (DirectPath)

Headphone output: not present

Remote control: RC-1234

Power consumption: 12 W (standby 0.3 W)

Dimensions (W × H × D): 434 × 107 × 273 mm

Weight: 4.0 kg

Colors: Black, Premium Silver

Included: CD player, RC-1234 remote control with batteries, stereo RCA cable, instruction manual

Frequently asked questions

Does the DCD-600NE have a headphone output?
No. The DCD-600NE is designed purely as a source for an integrated amplifier or preamp and has no headphone output. For headphones you'll need a separate headphone amplifier or an amplifier with a suitable output.

Is the output level adjustable?
No, the DirectPath output delivers a fixed level of 2.0 Vrms. The DCD-600NE therefore needs a downstream amplifier with its own volume control.

Does the DCD-600NE also play SACDs or files via USB?
No, neither. The DCD-600NE reads only audio CDs as well as self-burned CD-R/RW with MP3 or WMA. For SACD or USB playback you need the DCD-900NE or DCD-1700NE.

Does the DCD-600NE match the Denon PMA-600NE?
Yes, both devices belong together visually and sonically and are designed as a pair. That doesn't rule out combining it with other integrated amplifiers, though – we're happy to advise you on the right combination.

Why buy the Denon DCD-600NE from HD Zürisee?
Because even an entry-level CD player lives or dies by the right combination – amplifier, cables, placement.
