cantontownusar5wn
Canton Townus AR 5 Dolby Atmos Speaker, Walnut (Pair)

The Canton Townus AR 5 is a Dolby Atmos add-on speaker that sends its sound up to the ceiling and back down to your seat as a height channel.

This version wears real walnut veneer – the option for living rooms where technology is allowed to look like furniture. It sits on top of your front or rear speakers, or hangs on the wall via its integrated bracket. Always supplied as a pair.

Why the Canton Townus AR 5?

Because it brings the third dimension to your home cinema without anyone opening up the ceiling. Behind the veneer sits a licensed Dolby Enabled Speaker: sealed two-way enclosure, 154 mm woofer with titanium diaphragm and wave surround, topped by a 25 mm ceramic dome. The radiation angle is calculated for the ceiling reflection, and the voicing matches the Townus series. The result: height effects that tonally match the rest of your system instead of standing apart.

What you experience

A room that opens upward. A plane crosses above you, rain falls from above instead of from the front, and concert recordings regain the ceiling height that a pure surround layer swallows. What's remarkable is how natural it feels: no barrage of effects, simply the missing axis – one you instantly miss once you've had it.

Who is the Canton Townus AR 5 for?

Plainly put: for anyone who already has a surround system and wants to lift it to Atmos without running cables through the ceiling. You'll need an AV receiver or AV amplifier with Atmos decoding and two free amplifier channels. If you only listen to music in stereo, you simply don't need it. And with high, sloped, or heavily damped ceilings, let's discuss the alternatives beforehand.

Our verdict

The AR 5 in walnut is the rare case where an effects speaker still looks good even when the projector is off. Cleanly integrated sonically, mounted in fifteen minutes, acoustically dependent on your ceiling. That's exactly the point we'd rather clarify with you beforehand at HD Zürisee – Wädenswil is closer than you think.

Technical data

Type: Dolby Atmos add-on speaker (licensed Dolby Enabled Speaker)

Acoustic principle: 2-way, sealed

Woofer: 1× 154 mm titanium (wave surround)

Tweeter: 1× 25 mm ceramic

Frequency range: 50–30,000 Hz

Crossover frequency: 3,200 Hz

Nominal/music power handling: 60 / 100 W

Nominal impedance: 4–8 Ω

Connection: 24-carat gold-plated screw terminals

Placement: on top of a floorstanding speaker or wall-mounted (bracket included)

Finish: real walnut veneer

Dimensions (W×H×D): 17 × 14.5 × 26 cm (lying flat)

Weight: 3.6 kg per speaker

Sales unit: pair (two speakers)

Included: 2× Townus AR 5, feet, oval fabric covers, instruction manual (speaker cable not included)

Frequently asked questions

How does the AR 5 create sound from above?

Through reflection. The speaker radiates at a defined angle against the room's ceiling, from where the sound travels to your seat. Your hearing therefore locates the source above you. The advantage: no cutting into the ceiling, no cables to run, no structural work.

What electronics do I need for it?

An AV receiver or AV amplifier that decodes Dolby Atmos and has two free amplifier channels left over. In the setup, you register the two channels as Dolby Enabled or height speakers so the automatic calibration factors in the reflection correctly. A stereo integrated amplifier can't do Atmos.

How many speakers do I get per order?

Two pieces, i.e. a pair – that's how Canton sells the Townus AR 5. Anyone building a 7.1.4 system with four height channels accordingly needs two pairs. Get in touch and we'll put together a delivery to match, and sort out the necessary cable runs at the same time.

Does the AR 5 also work with speakers from other brands?

Yes. Sonically it's voiced to match the Townus series, but as a height channel it works equally well with other systems, as long as the AV amplifier calibrates the levels. More important than the brand is the mounting height and the ceiling material – those determine the effect.

Why buy the Canton Townus AR 5 at HD Zürisee?

Because nearly three decades of practical experience tell us when Atmos add-on speakers convince and when built-in ceiling speakers are the better choice.
