advance-paris-acd-apex-cd-player
Advance Paris ACD APEX 30th Edition CD Player

The Advance Paris ACD APEX 30th Edition is a CD player with tube output stage that routes the analog outputs through two Raytheon 5744 miniature tubes, combining digital precision with analog warmth. As part of the limited APEX anniversary series for the 30-year milestone, it comes in exclusive black – and incidentally proves that the CD collection on your shelf isn't a legacy burden, but a treasure chest.

Why the ACD APEX?

The special part sits behind the viewing window: the Raytheon 5744 tubes are rugged NOS miniature tubes, originally developed for military applications – long-lived, stable, and sonically exactly what sober digital technology benefits from. They refine both analog outputs, RCA as well as XLR. Conversion is handled by a WM8761 DAC with a linear frequency response from 20 Hz to 20 kHz; the measurements (THD+N 0.005 %, signal-to-noise ratio −106 dBrA) show that no one here confuses warmth with imprecision.

What you get

Balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs (both tube-refined, with fixed level), plus optical and coaxial digital outputs, in case you want to run the ACD APEX as a pure transport with an external DAC. The USB connection on the front plays MP3 and FLAC files (16-bit/44 kHz) from a stick, and the display shows CD text with artist, album and title. The ACD APEX has no headphone output – for headphones, connect them to the amplifier or a dedicated headphone amp. The included REM-19 remote control also operates the APEX amplifiers A8, A10 and A12 – one less remote on the coffee table.

Who is the ACD APEX right for – and who isn't it right for?

Honestly: the ACD APEX is for anyone who takes their CD collection seriously and wants a sonically and visually matching partner to the APEX amplifiers – but it harmonizes just as well with any other amplifier. If you want to play SACDs or stream high-resolution files from a stick, this isn't for you: the USB input is a nice bonus for 16/44 format, not a streamer replacement. And because the output level is fixed, it absolutely needs a preamp or an integrated amplifier behind it – it doesn't belong directly connected to a power amp.

Our verdict

A CD player that doesn't just read the disc, but gives it character – at a fair price and in limited numbers. But it works just as well with any other amplifier that has an RCA or XLR input.

Can I use the ACD APEX as a pure CD transport?

Yes, via the optical or coaxial digital output you pass the signal unchanged to an external DAC or your amplifier's converter. The tube output stage only affects the analog outputs – so you have both worlds to choose from.

Does the ACD APEX also play files?

Yes, via the USB connection on the front it reads MP3 and FLAC files in CD quality (16-bit/44 kHz) from a USB stick. It's not intended for high-resolution streaming from the network – for that, we recommend a dedicated streamer.

Can I connect headphones to the ACD APEX?

No, the ACD APEX doesn't have a headphone jack. Connect headphones to the amplifier or – sonically nicer – to a dedicated headphone amp. We're happy to discuss which combination suits your headphones and your budget.

How long do the Raytheon 5744 tubes last?

Very long. The 5744 is a miniature tube developed for military purposes with an exceptional lifespan of many thousands of operating hours.
